Being told that as a size 18 I can’t wear certain clothes

I do appreciate that when posting canvassing for opinions on outfits etc., you will get all sorts of responses.

But I have been told a few times now that as a size 18, I should cover up and not expose too much skin, basically purely because of my size.

AIBU to think this isn’t okay? I have as much a right to get my shoulders out as any other size!

Too damn right u have. Love how people feel the need to police other peoples bodies. Were went u want and don’t give a damn what someone else says. Why as a size 18 are u not supposed to show ur shoulders? People need something better to do with their lives than worrying about what other people are wearing.

randomchap · 06/07/2026 11:14

Wear what you want.

Unless it's crocs, they can bugger off

sweetpickle2 · 06/07/2026 11:15

A lot of people (especially on mumsnet) think anyone over a size 14 needs to hide in a dark room and never inflict their disgusting bodies on the world.

I personally ignore people like that, they are rude and ignorant and therefore their opinion is irrelevant to me.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 06/07/2026 11:16

I’m a size 18 and I will wear what the fuck I want.

Even crocs. I have red ones!

Who is telling you this OP?

I’ve had comments like it on style and beauty, and Reddit.

Is it the shoulders that are the issue?

I only ask this as some people - no matter what their size - do not dress appropriately, they just have no dress sense. I suppose this may be more noticeable on a larger lady.

But what was the question you asked?

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 06/07/2026 11:22

My best friend is a size 18. There are some things she won’t wear like vest tops as she doesn’t like to show her arms much (she does wear three quarter sleeves) but certain styles really suit her
(loose long sleeved shirts) far better than me as a 14. She’s very toned through Pilates though.

Wear what you like!

weavingrugs · 06/07/2026 11:23

Of course you can wear what you want, but you equally can’t ask for opinions and then expect only a certain type of comment.
While sexual, abusive or racist comments say, would be completely out of order, if you are literally asking what people think of a certain look, they have the right to say they don’t think it looks good on you.
I am short and I believe some styles look better on taller willowy people for example. Would that not be ok to say?

Malasana · 06/07/2026 11:23

You can and should wear whatever you like. It’s no one else’s business.
If anyone doesn’t like it, they need to avert their eyes. I hate it when people try to police what other people wear and decide what is and isn’t suitable based on body shape and size.

Jumbaree · 06/07/2026 11:23

I wouldn’t wear a bikini cause my stretch marks would turn most peoples stomach’s. I ask myself if people want to see them and the answer is no. I can’t see the issue with shoulders. Obese people in crop tops is never a flattering look, and I cannot abide seeing topless men wandering around either. Grim.

Octavia64 · 06/07/2026 11:24

I’m a size 18.

i wear what the fuck I want.

nobody has ever commented on my clothes except occasionally someone says I like that dress.

(I do use a wheelchair so maybe they think having a go at a disabled person for their fashion sense is not on?)

Wickedlittledancer · 06/07/2026 11:25

I’m on style and beauty a lot, can you link to this as I have never seen it, if also say the majority of posters are large themselves as per the population demographics, so would be curious to see the context people are telling you this.

i and most other people think anyone should wear what they please.

About a halterneck dress as a size 18

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 06/07/2026 11:25

The only thing I personally don’t like seeing is eg too much butt cheek in shorts but that’s at any size. Something which doesn’t suit you but you wear it anyway (at any size), matching clothes to your skin tone so you look like you’re nude. But they’re my own personal opinions.

Squirrel60 · 06/07/2026 11:25

Tell the morons to bollocks off, it's your body, not theirs, so you'll wear what you like when you want, and if they don't like what they see, they can look away!

But that’s not what I asked.

I asked about a halter neck dress and got told “as you’re a size 18, it’s far too much flesh on display”

You’re asking for opinions and then moan when you get ones you don’t like though. Some people think you should cover up. And? It doesn’t mean that you have to.

I don’t think bigger people look good showing too much skin, but they’re not here to please me or anyone else so they should wear what they like. If I was ASKED about an outfit that showed a lot of skin, I might say I don’t like it and suggest something that I think would look better.

Wickedlittledancer · 06/07/2026 11:26

SwanRivers · 06/07/2026 11:19

yes I’m curious as to the context, hopefully the op links, as I have never seen anyone say on here please cover up as you’re and 18

Sparrowsandbudgies · 06/07/2026 11:26

I think you must be posting or surrounding yourself with some weird people. Choose your company and influences better. I am a size 22 and I’ve never, ever had any negative comments about my body - that I’m aware of anyway.

About a halterneck dress as a size 18

That should be absolutely fine.

I know some women who are larger and they look better larger. When they lose weight they look ill. They just have that Rubenesque look. Height can help there too with how you carry off weight.
