AIBU after being reported for apparently targeting a member of staff

OK no one is going to believe this to be true but I need to share it. I was spoken to today by my line manager as I've been reported in our 'call it out' policy. I made a member of staff feel targeted and picked on.
I bet you won't be able to guess what I did that made them feel so bad.
It's so crackers I actually thought my manager was joking.
Anyone want to guess?

Based on this thread, I am wondering if you get through your life by laughing at it. You did it with your colleague and you did it with this thread. I have a tendency to sometimes find a way to laugh at things to make myself feel better too.

But this can be interpreted by some people to mean that you are snarky or nihilistic and someone not to be taken seriously. Which isn't great!

Anyway, I am not a swifty or anything but I wouldn't slag her off at work, even though what you said really wasn't that bad at all. It was probably just your tone

Oh FFS. A random comment about celebrity wedding makes the OP “snarky or nihilistic”? What rubbish.

Our country is doomed if we have such wet wipes.

Please add the answer to your original post - that shit is INSANITY - is it really that you said you didn't understand the hype of TS??? It can't be. I would have raised a grievance against anyone who tried to 'pull me up' for expressing a basic opinion at work. Freedom of speech and it sounds like you were on your break too. Ask HR for an itemised list of acceptable work conversations because you're now terrified of speaking. Ffs.

DRose3 · 06/07/2026 22:33

It’s honestly pathetic that someone feels they need to complain about this to a manager. I would counter it with anxiety about speaking to colleagues for fear of repercussions. It would really concern me that this kind of thing can happen.

KidsDoBetter · 06/07/2026 22:41

@Vintageshirtsearch pray to god the Complainer doesn’t read this evening’s DM. The 1000 person wedding sounds utterly dire.

And I say this as someone who spent an ungodly amount for two tickets to Eras, enjoyed it immensely and rates Red as one of my favourite albums ever.

But clearly they both said - hey we both work in a stadium!!! Let’s do it there it will be so cute and then we won’t have to leave anyone we’ve ever met or worked with out.

No one had the balls to tell them - a stadium will look tacky no matter what. You will hage 3 hours of staggered arrivals. Rude.

And a buffet. I’m sorry but I bloody hate queuing for my dinner at a wedding. And I am not an A list celebrity.

Your colleague has lost their mind and needs to get a grip.

During a coffee break, another staff member said they thought Taylor Swifts wedding was over the top and a bit ridiculous. I said "yeah I agree" the complainer said it was to keep it private and I laughed and said "in madison square garden" the other staff member said he didn't get the hype over taylor swift and I said I didn't either. End of conversation.
Apparently this deeplynupset the complainer as they love taylor swift and they felt mocked.

Definitely YANBU, OP - it’s a them problem. I bet they have a (in their case fake) diagnosis and are the perpetual victim type.

Vitrolinsanity · 06/07/2026 23:18

I’d have bloody loved to have been on the guest list. I can also see why most other sane-minded folk would not.

id have loved to see the face of the poor manager that had to take this seriously.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 06/07/2026 06:21

I doubt Taylor herself is as upset about the negative coverage as you and the OP's colleague sound. It's absolutely nuts to be so emotionally invested in a celebrity that hearing criticism of them causes you distress.

This. I would guess she is merrily counting her millions (good for her) and having the lols at the grown adults losing their shit because other gown adults don’t like her music, wedding coverage etc.

Fucking hell. They're batshit.

DecisionTime123 · 07/07/2026 00:46

I see no one has held the OP to account for stating that Harry Styles is a twat. I don't even like Harry Styles but I quite feel I'd like to take offence at this assertion thank you very much.

DreamTheMoors · 07/07/2026 01:42

You could’ve said that Taylor & Travis make a terrible pair.
Christ. That may have sent her to the hospital.

Vintageshirtsearch · 06/07/2026 22:05

No it didn't come up actually and I didn't think about it

When you were giving you version of the “incident” to your line manager … when you say didn’t come up - are you saying you didn’t mention that you’d been agreeing with someone and gave your version of what you’d said and you’d been agreeing to? Really?! @Vintageshirtsearch

Edited

Yes of course I told the true story but I didn't ask whether the other colleague had been spoken to
I didn't think of it at the time but I'll gey more clarity when I go in today

Actually yes, this. 100%. You could say you’ve been reflecting on it and now feel uncomfortable expressing personal opinions on non-work topics. You felt you understood what ‘appropriate’ was but now, given you had thought it was totally ok, you have no idea what is expected at this work place.

Vintageshirtsearch · 06/07/2026 20:19

One of the previous posters LITERALLY said she was just a girl who wanted a private wedding

Key word is ‘one’.

Radicalrach · 06/07/2026 20:21

Do you think you’d take leave if, heavens forbid, TS tragically passed or jacked in career and was never seen again?

No, but I would be sad for a day or so.

Would you take leave if Taylor Swift, heaven forbid, died or just fell off the radar and said she was resigning and was no more in the business?

Not a Swiftie ‘fan’, no. I AM a Swiftie.

DontDareCallMeDarling · 07/07/2026 09:56

What's so amazing about Taylor above other artists? I like a few of her songs, but I don't know much about her. I was amazed that she's 37.

FlamingoFloss · 07/07/2026 10:01

Owly11 · 05/07/2026 21:43

It sounds like you did take sides in the argument. If you are older perhaps they see you as having more power in the organisation. It's obviously ridiculous of them to report you but I can see how it might have felt to them that you were dismissive of one person's view and supportive of the other.

Give over

Dear lord! Her fans could be so annoying and over the top sometimes. I'm not exactly a fan of her music, I think she's ok, but her fanbase behaviour makes people hate her so much more than her music ever could!
