AIBU after being reported for apparently targeting a member of staff

OK no one is going to believe this to be true but I need to share it. I was spoken to today by my line manager as I've been reported in our 'call it out' policy. I made a member of staff feel targeted and picked on.
I bet you won't be able to guess what I did that made them feel so bad.
It's so crackers I actually thought my manager was joking.
Anyone want to guess?

Op not likely to admit to mocking is she?

But most definitely a possibility

Is "mocking" someone for their opinion on a celebrity a terrible thing?? 😂

I am an employee and got reported by a manager the other week.

She said she was cancelling an event because of the heat wave and rearranging for early August, so I responded by saying it’s still likely to be hot in August and she took offence. Had no idea until one of the managers told me off. I think when people go to HR about trivial crap, or managers, they are out to cause shit. There’s nicer ways to go about things.

Haha. People are so weird!

but I guess it depends on what “mocking” looks like in RL

HelenaWilson · 06/07/2026 18:23

sometimes it can be very difficult to be a Taylor fan..

Um...
You listen to the music
You watch the videos
You read articles and interviews
You maybe put a poster on your bedroom wall and buy some merchandise
You go to a concert if you can afford it and there's one near enough to you
What else is there?

During a coffee break, another staff member said they thought Taylor Swifts wedding was over the top and a bit ridiculous. I said "yeah I agree" the complainer said it was to keep it private and I laughed and said "in madison square garden" the other staff member said he didn't get the hype over taylor swift and I said I didn't either. End of conversation.
Apparently this deeplynupset the complainer as they love taylor swift and they felt mocked.

That made me choke on my tea 🤣🤣🤣

Yeah, fair point. I mean in this scenario it sounds like a non-issue, but that's not always the case.

Well exactly… in this scenario posted entirely from the perspective of the person hauled up for the mocking. So hardly like to be objective!

I think a lot of swifties are in a parasocial relationship

they’re not “normal” fans as youve described

they feel they have to defend every single minor slight against/about her even though she wouldn’t spit on them if they were on fire

AgingLikeGazpacho · 06/07/2026 18:38

I worked at one place that had a rule that for scenarios like this there was no escalation path unless you first tried to resolve the problem yourself with the person directly (unless there was a relevant protected characteristic at play)

Thought it was a good rule - if you raised a petty grievance with your manager their first question would be "Have you raised this with x directly?" and they would prompt you to think about what a good outcome would be from the conversation and then work with that person to improve the relationship.

They'd take a dim view of anyone raising petty grievances about their peers.

It wasn't in the UK though. Uk employers are probably more nervous about keeping an audit trail to demonstrate they've taken complaints seriously to protect themselves should the loon take them to employment tribunal

Vintageshirtsearch · 06/07/2026 18:39

There was no mocking . I hardly know the person , me and other bloke literally boiling kettle.

I didn't say I personally was having difficulty with it. I'm not.

There's just a lot of commentary online. If you're not aware of it, that's great for you, honestly. A quick search will find a lot of hate. Some people are sensitive and take it as a personal attack.

But you are a MASSIVE swiftie @NeverTalksToStrangers2 ? Even though apparently your comment about being a Swiftie can “sometimes be hard” wasn’t about how you feel?

Vintageshirtsearch · 05/07/2026 22:38

I was wondering this. I've not given any specifics. I'm under a forum name. I've not said anything nasty about anyone or identified my workplace or the person

To be fair you have confirmed that the complainant doesn't have a jewel name. that narrows it down immensely!

How is it bashing her to say she has made business decisions and made herself very famous. That is literal fact. My comment was intended to show the stupidity of the fans who baby her by saying she's just a girl. This is what I mean if you don't say you love her and everything she does you are bashing her WTF is there anyone else famous that has fans like this. I had no idea this was all so crazy. What is it fuelled by?

You were ‘bashing’ with your sarcastic ‘she’s just a girl who accidentally wandered into a stage and accidentally started singing.’ Don’t lose your argument (which you are winning hands down, btw!) with disingenuity.

chaosmaker · 06/07/2026 19:10

No wonder I lose the will to live

adragoncalledaudrey · 06/07/2026 19:11

My head is frying at intimidating full stops.

Seriously, that is one of the biggest piles of shite I have ever had the misfortune to read.

God forbid any of the folk have ever any real problems to contend with.

You’ll excuse me for not elaborating on the subject but I’m currently being harassed by a curly bracket.

Theworldsgonemadagain · 06/07/2026 19:17

What a drip your colleague is. How does that even get discussed with management. Our manager would have said get over it.

Ehh no- i was saying that the swifties reduced her to just a girl. No disingenuity here at all.

So you’ve been reported… what’s the next step? Any “punishment”?

I believe this. Swifties are cultists and insufferable.

Did the other staff member get 'called out' too?

Which makes sense if you're 13. Not if you're an adult.

My DS13 loves MJs music. I told him I used to listen to it but I had a hard time getting over him being a paedophile. Ds looked at me and said "well he's dead anyway so let's just listen to his music". No reporting to his dad about how I had hurt his feelings😂

Gardenisablooming · 06/07/2026 20:00

Maybe find a TS figure and make a shrine in the ladies. Deny all knowledge..
Or next time you see her be like. Hi colleague, wasn't sure what swift you were on..oops I mean shift....
She isn't fit for the adult world is she?

It is so weird that crusty oldies admire composers like Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, Greig, Tchaikovsky and others, while Taylor and Ed can bang out a tune each in a few hours and entertain millions! They are the true musical geniuses!

Please enlighten us as to how long those crusty old composers took to knock out their greatest hits.. and whole you're at it, how you know for sure how long Taylor, Ed etc take to pull a song together..and with how much help
