AIBU after being reported for apparently targeting a member of staff

OK no one is going to believe this to be true but I need to share it. I was spoken to today by my line manager as I've been reported in our 'call it out' policy. I made a member of staff feel targeted and picked on.
I bet you won't be able to guess what I did that made them feel so bad.
It's so crackers I actually thought my manager was joking.
Anyone want to guess?

Also Taylor Swift is not a 'girl' she's an adult woman. This infantilisation of women is possibly part of the issue and why her fans seem to be sensitive in a teenage fan club way

Off topic, but your comment reminded me of a band I liked in the 90s called Teenage Fanclub.
Irrelevant. I know. (Off to ask alexa to play old school indie....)

Idprefernotto · 06/07/2026 15:47

Christ alive, some of the comments in this thread! 🫠 There was a recent thread about how some people have started overreacting on MN to fairly innocuous posts...

I would ask for all communication about this absurd matter to be put in writing and say you will only respond to written communication. That she help focus your manager's mind on the sheer stupidity of pandering to this and also, it would make for a riveting employment tribunal.

Yes, in writing in an e-mail is good as the manager will actually have to type Taylor Swift Wedding, and at that point if they don"t see the pointless stupidity and waste of company time they are in the wrong role.

Swiftie1878 · 06/07/2026 15:43

Oh, I didn’t realise this was going to become a Taylor-bashing thread. How sad.
I thought the point was that everyone’s entitled to their opinions?

That was an opinion, wasn’t it?

True. If they don’t think, ‘what the hell nonsense am I writing here’, then maybe they too are a ‘Swiftie’. 😂

I completely agree. The “fandoms” nowadays are absolutely wild.

A big one that comes to mind is the 1D fandom. I will often see Liam Paynes girlfriend at his time of death come up on socials and a quick look at the hateful comments she gets flooded with on every post tells me people are far too over-invested to such an extent they feel it’s their place to speak on behalf of a dead man they have literally never met.

Very bloody odd behaviour.

Fandoms are like this homogenous blob all moving as one. It’s almost got a science fiction vibe to it of a shadowy mass gliding (or more like trampling) over anyone who disagrees with them and devouring them up. Black Mirror should cover it.

ElsieMc · 06/07/2026 16:09

I was told off by management for telling a colleague I was going to Center Parcs for a week. She was very stern and angry with me.

It was because no-one wanted to cover my role because my boss was such an a-hole. I had committed the sin of tipping them off causing mass refusals. It was therefore completely my fault that my boss was a nightmare.

I think your crime is equal to mine op. How dare you.

Workplaces have become completely bonkers. I’m glad I work alone nowadays.

Really? It doesn’t sound like she took sides at all. You sound as ridiculous as the person making the complaint

She didn't 'take sides'. She expressed an opinion over something that the vast majority of' people would consider trivial and which in no reasonable world of any sort could ever be comsidered a threat or micro aggresson to someone who holds an opposing opinion.

The person with the opposing view ( that Taylor Swift"s wedding was not unreasonable and was not over the top) needs to be braver, and stand by their beliefs regardless of what others think (.ie grow a pair )

Imean really if they cant practice being brave in that very safe scenario, what the hell will they do when it is something that really matters

Or maybe they were hoping to rent out Wembley Stadium for their own wedding?

How is it bashing her to say she has made business decisions and made herself very famous. That is literal fact. My comment was intended to show the stupidity of the fans who baby her by saying she's just a girl. This is what I mean if you don't say you love her and everything she does you are bashing her WTF is there anyone else famous that has fans like this. I had no idea this was all so crazy. What is it fuelled by?

I think social media is bleeding into real life.

Most Swifties don't tolerate dissent on social media so they think they should be treated as having protected characteristics, as a pp called it.

I suppose fandoms can become like cults and they worship their idol like a religion. I’ve been known in my life to be an avid fan of a group or singer but it never spilled over into the bizarre, and the interest would inevitably wane over time.

@Vintageshirtsearch OP, swifties are not normal. I wouldn't even engage with them on this thread if I were you. Just google Taylor Swift toxic fans and do some reading. It's a cult, basically.

Did you use a full stop in a message?

I was actually taken to task and called rude for this by a 23 year old. I was dumbfounded but they were deadly serious

Vintageshirtsearch · 06/07/2026 17:09

What's wrong with full stops???? Oh god.

Yeah, enlighten me....
I use them, all the time! I was told to do so at the end of a sentence.
My husband was grabbed and thrown over a desk for not using full stops at 6 or 7 years old, around the early seventies. In UK. By his teacher. The world has changed quite a bit, has it not?

During a coffee break, another staff member said they thought Taylor Swifts wedding was over the top and a bit ridiculous. I said "yeah I agree" the complainer said it was to keep it private and I laughed and said "in madison square garden" the other staff member said he didn't get the hype over taylor swift and I said I didn't either. End of conversation.
Apparently this deeplynupset the complainer as they love taylor swift and they felt mocked.

Were they mocked?

Radicalrach · 06/07/2026 17:58

Is this a supermarket or similar?

Op not likely to admit to mocking is she?

But most definitely a possibility

I think this level of fandom is a bit all consuming for me. I don't get the having to battle bit. Stay off the Internet and just listen to the music and it will be fine. It's not that deep as my niece would say

Exactly.
"...sometimes it can be very difficult to be a Taylor fan..."
Are you listening to yourself,
@NeverTalksToStrangers2 ?! 😂😂😂

MojitoGirl888 · 06/07/2026 18:12

I am an employee and got reported by a manager the other week.

She said she was cancelling an event because of the heat wave and rearranging for early August, so I responded by saying it’s still likely to be hot in August and she took offence. Had no idea until one of the managers told me off. I think when people go to HR about trivial crap, or managers, they are out to cause shit. There’s nicer ways to go about things.
