Just looking for sympathy really.

I’ve a bmi of 28. I need to lose a lot of weight. For the last two weeks I’ve been good but MY GOD the hunger and sheer depressing nature of it all. My BMR is only 1600. Sticking to 1000 or less is so hard.

My husband, on the other hand, seems to have no hunger and amazing self control. Last night he ate a single sweet potato and declared that as his dinner. His BMR is 2700. I can see him visibly changing before my eyes.

I guess I’m just jealous.

Thank you for all the comments.

If I ate 1600, then I’d lose nothing, because that’s what my body needs to maintain. I do mix in intermittent fasting, so that on the odd meal I can feel relatively normal. I also walk lots, to try to counter my sedentary job and go to the gym a couple of times a week.

Yesterday I had 3 scrambled eggs with a bit of cheese and veg for lunch = 500 cals. Then for dinner 4 rice cakes with cheese, salad and crab sticks = 500 cals.

No alcohol currently. I do absolutely love a G&T and snacks.

Have you considered 5:2 @SassyLemonFish? There's a long running thread on here with lots of regulars and we tend to fast (500-600 cals/day) 2-3 times a week then eat to our normal TDEE the other days. Might be more sustainable for you than 1000 cals every day with no respite.

I think sometimes it's the food that you eat as well which make it hared. You say had cheese twice yesterday - but I personally find I can't eat a lot of cheese. it's very calorific for a small amount. For the 'calorie cost' of say 1x cheese sandwich, I could have = 1 x tuna and salad sandwich or 1 x hummous and salad sandwich, bowl of raspberries, a yoghurt and a piece of melon for the same calories as the cheese sandwich which then keeps me far more full and not hungry. I am a cheese fiend, I love it, but I find it's just not worth it when I can eat so much more of other stuff... It's hard to get into but the less you have, the less you want. On the odd occasion I have a cheese sandwich but generally I try to find other foods that I can have more of that fill me up.

Exactly this. Check out Madelaine Rascan and Bethany Dobson on YouTube/Instagram who talk about the situation you are describing and how to eat more food for fewer calories.

As others have mentioned, eating small amounts of food is unsustainable and sets you up for a life of misery.

rice cakes are not filling. Look at slimming world. No cal counting, just stick to plan, Which is generous, especially with the new changes, my husbands consultant always moaning about the WLI its scary actually how many are on this now... She is against them. Husbands work pals mum died from using them as got pancreatitis and did not recover. Look at slimming world. It does work and I am surprised how much you can eat of the right foods for health. If you are not going to then try 1300 cals as you can not function on 1000 thats not healthy!

Of course she is against WLI, they’ll probably put her out of a job.

WhatToWearMilan · Today 12:21

What are you eating in an average day?

I had to overhaul my diet for health reasons & have lost about a stone now

I typically eat

Porridge with chia & nuts

Soup (generally tuscan bean or spiced red lentil) i make the soups & they are full of veg & always have lentils / beans / chickpeas etc. 2 x slices organic sourdough

OR sardines (in water) on sourdough with salad

Dinner is something along salmon & veg or chicken / eggs / tuna with lots of salad

I have a bowl of berries each evening

I am never hungry & i eat large volumes so feel satiated

I wish I knew the secret with calories as throughout my life I have to eat below 1,000 calories a day if I want to lose weight and if I eat above 1,800 I will put on weight.
i guess I just use calories very efficiently. But it is aggravating when people say ‘oh just eat 1,200 - 1,500 calories a day and you will lose weight’ when I know that I won’t.

No it's not
Your TDEE is what your body needs to maintain, which is higher than your BMR. Work out your TDEE to start with.

If 1800 is your maintenance calories then you'll lose weight on any number under 1800. If you think you can only lose on 1000 then you're not tracking properly, and you're eating over 1000 without realising.

The 'secret' to being able to eat more and maintain your weight is to increase your muscle mass.

MyFastZebra · Today 12:31

I read a book about this and it really helped me. It's often a mental thing with people.

If we keep thinking "I need to lose weight" We get more and more stressed as we are looking at a negative thought "I'm fat and and I have to lose weight". This gets people into a cycle of despair.

If we change it to think a positive thought, it works better.

The new thought should be " I want to attract health".

This worked for me. In this mindset, I stopped looking at what I was eating all the time and I started doing exercise that I enjoy. For me it is swimming. And i then lost weight

Ophy83 · Today 12:34

The thing that works best for me is cutting out bread/pasta/rice/potatoes rather than calorie counting. Focus on getting fibre and good protein and some fat. Look up volume eating- you really can eat the classic MN massive salad

MiddleAgedDread · Today 12:35

1000 calories a day is dangerous!

Oh I count every single calorie I eat and to lose between 1lb and half a pound a week, I need to eat less than 1000. Anything between 1,000 and 1500 it’s between 1lb and 2lb a month.
years ago I tried weight watchers and I ended up putting weight on because their amounts where just too much for me.
I’m 5’5 and weight jumps between 9st10 and 12st so fairly normal. But my metabolism is nonexistent

MissyMooPoo2 · Today 12:50

I'm doing the same - but currently with a BMI of 32 (it was 35 when I started). The time it will take to reach a healthy BMI seems immense right now.

Wickedlittledancer · Today 12:57

ToffeePennie · Today 08:45

My BMI is 42.9.
to get a hysterectomy I have to have a bmi of 35 or less.
because I can’t have the hysterectomy, I have to have prostap, toibolone, desogesterol amongst others. All the lovely drugs that make you retain weight. The ones that turn a cup of water into fat. It’s fucking impossible, so depressing and even worse when some twat says “well just go on monjaro” like the cost isn’t extortionate and it doesn’t lead to massive health complications down the road. (Especially if like me you have other long standing heart issues that it cannot have been tested for).
Even worse when that twat saying “just go on monjaro” is your bloody mum who has lost masses of weight on it, but is now obsessed and struggling….
With you in solidarity.

The drugs clearly don’t lead to massive health issues down the line for anyone not contraindicated don’t be silly, and the drugs are about to be approved for cardio vascular health. They may not be tested for your unique issues so you can’t take them, but indicating everyone will have massive health issues is nothing short of ridiculous

She didn't write that mounjaro causes massive health problems for everyone. she said that it causes health problems for people who already have conditions.

My mother was advised by her doctor to take mounjaro. I have absolutely no idea why they thought this was a good idea as my mother has diabetes, long term gall bladder problems and a stent in her heart.

She started mounjaro as immediately became seriously ill on it. She came off it herself.

I feel that they are too quick to prescribe mounjaro to overweight people and not looking at people's previous medical history.

That’s really poor. My nephew’s wife is similarly obese and needs a hysterectomy. Because she needs to lose the weight to be able to have the surgery, she’s been prescribed Mounjaro on the NHS. Quite right too.

She’s lost almost 4 stone so far.

slimming world has a 97 percent failure rate. As in 97 percent of people regain all the weight. It’s how they make their money. Of course they are against the injections.

I’ve been told by my gynae (who apparently has no knowledge of my prior heart condition) to “just get monjaro” when I mentioned the cost he told me “well the price is coming down all the time” and it was implied without the drugs I would have zero help.
I called my GP to request some help and got asked “have you tried no-carb? I’m a 28 year old Asian man who lost all my weight just going no carb.” I also have thyroid issues so that’s really dangerous advice. Plus he’s a 28 year old Asian man who is not a 38 year old peri-menopausal woman who’s having to take medication to keep my periods from being so bad I can’t function. I feel desperately stuck between a rock and a hard place, I’m so contra-indicated and I need to loose weight, but it’s incredibly difficult with my medication and I can’t do it alone.
I then asked my GP if he could refer me to a clinic with the council or someone who can help. “no, because you’re just fat. It’s your own fault, you don’t get help” was his exact words. I was in tears.
My husband overheard the conversation and was utterly disgusted and it’s currently going through with a legal advisor to see if we can do something because I don’t want anyone else to have his “advice” that could end up killing someone!!

BountifulPantry · Today 13:34

YANBU- losing weight is HARD especially as a woman.

I feel like it’s so much more to do with hormones and stress than we think. Every time I’ve managed to lose weight it’s been in a happy relaxed time of my life. When I’m stressed and down it seems impossible.

Exactly and the work friends mum didn’t die from getting pancreatitis due to the meds, it’s now been proven it protects the pancreas, she will have died due to pancreatitis either due to gallstones, heavy drinking or too many fat particles in the blood, like anyone else who gets pancreatitis. Not because she took mounjaro.

such misinformation, but a slimming world consultant against them, lol, yeah of course she is,

Snufkin88 · Today 13:39

My bmi is 27 and while I’m not skinny I don’t feel “fat “ and it’s annoying hearing someone with a bmi of 28 refer to themselves in such terms . I’ve about half a stone to lose .
regardless 1000kcal is absolutely miserable amount no wonder you are not coping
