I have been digging and scouring the web for baby names. I really like names that feel vintage and earthy at the same time... for girls i really like

  • Eloise

  • Ember

  • Violet

  • Twyla

  • Winona

I'm looking for this same vibe. The kind of name that gives the same energy as the sunset beaming into your grandmas house- dust peaking through the rays, doilies everywhere, flowers. Preferably names that aren't SUPER common. I have a very unique name and want to keep the quirkiness in the fam.

OP posts:

I had Sylvine on my name list. Pronunciation is beautiful -aim closer to ”Sylvin” than “SylVEEN” and make sure the L is actually pronounced so it’s “SIL” not swallowed into a sound like “siw”

It’s a French name of course like all the prettiest names!!

“Sylvine is a feminine name of Latin origin, derived from the word silva, meaning "forest" or "woodland". As a French variant of the name Sylvain (the feminine form), it evokes imagery of lush nature, tranquility, and growth.

”those named Sylvine are often associated with creative, artistic, and deeply sensitive personalities who find peace in the outdoors”

Perfection.

Dorcas, Esther, Bertha, Euphemia, Florence.

How about Cosima? Its either Italian or Greek origin meaning universe and harmony. Only 21 babies in the whole of the UK were registered as Cosima in 2024, so it's pretty unique.

Other similar options are Celeste, Aurora, Caresse, Anastasia or Isadora

I pronounced this Sylv-eye-n / Syl - vine until I saw your pronunciation. I wouldn’t automatically pronounce it your way, although that sounds better.

There's a Twyla in Schitts Creek, but I first came across it in Terry Pratchett's Hogfather, or one of the Susan books anyway, where Twyla is a little girl who is quite knowingly twee with quite pretentious parents. "Gawain and Twyla, who’d been named by people who apparently loved them, had been put to bed by the time Susan got in"

I've only come across it in Twyla Tharp, the American choreographer/dancer.

I thought Lavinia.

Or Esmeralda.

Twyla I thought was a typo OP? I've never heard of it ... It sounds like a brand name for plasticated twine.

Sorry, that's already been pointed out.

I'd say:

Marigold
Etta
Marilyn
Willow
Celeste
Joni

You said earthy so my first thought was Eartha 🤔🤣 as in Eartha Kitt (born in the 1920s, so vintage...)

I'd also think nature names - Ivy, Iris and Hazel seem particularly vintage.

I am doubtless being too literal.

Mathilda and Margot and Mabel and Dorothy also spring to mind.

Twyla Tharp is a famous US dancer and choreographer, now in her 80s. She has a sister called Twanette and twin brothers called Stanford and Stanley.😀

Twanette!!!! 😱

I didn't think anything could be worst that Waynetta but Twanette has surpassed it in awfulness.

Yes, it sounds ultra-hillbilly, but the funny thing is that she’s one of those high-end Martha’s Vineyard interior designers/artists. Basically, if you want your house to look like the one Diane Keaton lives in in Something’s Gotta Give, she’s the one.

I liked that house.

I liked that house.

I think everyone watched that film for the house porn rather than whether Diane K would choose sexy doctor Keanu Reeves or randy old pitbull Jack Nicholson!

I actually cannot even recall that Keanu was in it! I do remember Jack though. He has a certain je ne sais quoi. But the house I could describe in detail.

Diane often got house porn movies to act in. She looked the way I want to look in my 60s/70s!

I think Miss Havisham would be perfect. Missy as a diminutive. 😵‍💫

And I will be that person who says that something can’t be very unique . 🤓

Joking aside -what about Hepzibah or Salome? Darrell from Malory Towers? Wilhelmina? Gertrude? Hildegaard ( after the saint H of Bingen?) Joyce? Gladys? Letiticia? Lettice? Enid?

😂😂 christ alive lol

I’ve seen “Stasi” suggested as a cute nickname for Anastasia in multiple places - I am genuinely baffled by people’s ignorance. How about Nazi, short for Natasha?! 🥴🙄

Anyway OP, my suggestion is “Sylvia”. Means woodland. Kind of old lady, not super popular - I’ve met one small Sylvia.
