Vintage, earthy baby name inspo??

avicci · Yesterday 11:45

I have been digging and scouring the web for baby names. I really like names that feel vintage and earthy at the same time... for girls i really like

  • Eloise

  • Ember

  • Violet

  • Twyla

  • Winona

I'm looking for this same vibe. The kind of name that gives the same energy as the sunset beaming into your grandmas house- dust peaking through the rays, doilies everywhere, flowers. Preferably names that aren't SUPER common. I have a very unique name and want to keep the quirkiness in the fam.

Are you in USA OP? Twyla ?? Winona ?? You're either American or Australian I'm guessing.

Of your list only Violet seems vintage and there doesn't seem to be a common vibe to the names.

Petra
Eartha
Aphra
Georgia
Daisy

Edited

I was going to suggest Eartha (like Eartha Kitt) it's certainly earthy.

Except every time she says it someone will mishear it as Amber and she’ll have to say, “no not Amber… Ember, with an E. Like in a fire. Sigh.”

I like pp suggestion of Tabitha and I will add Sylvie.

Only if she’s is Australia…. And she might not visit there that often

Lavinia

I thought Lavinia.

Or Esmeralda.

Twyla I thought was a typo OP? I've never heard of it ... It sounds like a brand name for plasticated twine.

Saltysweetspicy · Yesterday 15:29

Violet just sounds like violent to me. I don't get earthy sunset dusky vibes from it

Sorry - my first thought was Mud.

Violet is nice.
What about looking at Dickens names?

Dickens female characters

Charles Dickens created a wide array of memorable female characters, ranging from virtuous heroines to eccentric or tragic figures, each contributing significantly to his novels.

Notable Female Characters
Esther Summerson – The strong, motherly heroine of Bleak House, known for her compassion and moral integrity
.
Miss Havisham – The embittered, jilted bride in Great Expectations, famous for her decaying wedding attire and obsession with revenge

(Nell is short for Penelope, and others)
Little Nell – The frail, virtuous child in The Old Curiosity Shop, whose death epitomizes Victorian sentimentality .
Lady Dedlock – A wealthy woman in Bleak House who harbors a secret about her illegitimate daughter, embodying themes of privilege and hidden shame

.
Matilda Price – Appears in Nicholas Nickleby, representing kindness and loyalty
.
Madeline Bray – From Nicholas Nickleby, a young woman caring for her selfish father and eventually marrying Nicholas

.
Arabella Allen – Sister of Benjamin Allen in The Pickwick Papers, eventually marrying Mr. Winkle
.
Mrs. Nickleby – Nicholas Nickleby’s mother, reflecting Dickens’ portrayal of maternal influence and domestic life
.
Rosa Dartle – A character in David Copperfield, known for her sharp tongue and complex emotions
.
Nell Trent – Another name for Little Nell, emphasizing her central role in The Old Curiosity Shop

Hello all, here’s my baby ‘Miss Havisham’

I do: "The grass, the thicket, and the fruit-tree wild/ White hawthorn, and the pastoral eglantine/ Fast fading violets cover'd up in leaves". "A violet by a mossy stone/ Half-hidden from the eye" etc

There's a Twyla in Schitts Creek, but I first came across it in Terry Pratchett's Hogfather, or one of the Susan books anyway, where Twyla is a little girl who is quite knowingly twee with quite pretentious parents. "Gawain and Twyla, who’d been named by people who apparently loved them, had been put to bed by the time Susan got in"

It generates uncomfortable images of twistedness and being tied up for me.

I guess, twist, twixt, twine ...

That’s funny I’m watching Descendants 3 with my daughter and they keep mentioning the ember which is magical object. I thought to myself Ember would be a nice name! I like it but I’m not sure it fits the vibe you’re going for but it’s my favourite out of the ones you’ve suggested. I don’t like Twyla where on earth did you find that one!? Winona’s ok but everyone will think of Winona Ryder.

Twyla is a prostitute in Riverdale so it's s no from me

TheCountessofLocksley · Yesterday 16:07

Eloise and Violet are the best from your list, but be prepared for Violet to be mispronounced by the majority of people. Both names are very Bridgerton though….so may become more popular (or you could inspiration from there).

i quite like

How about "Avis"? I have 9 women in my family tree called this - around 1700-1850. It means "bird".
It doesn't seem common these days.
