Is this racism?

Basically I was at the pub in the pub and nobody was behind the bar.

I was first in line.

An elderly couple come and and then another man who slams his glass down.

When the bar lady asks "who is first"? I replied me.

The elderly couple say "we have been waiting ages".

And the man next says "I didn't see her".

I felt this was due to me being mixed race.
I felt quite intimidated.

I only popped in for a drink whilst OH has the kids.

I feel any shaken up as the only ethnic person in the place.

Oh come on it’s a frequent occurrence and has been since the year dot. People can be gits no matter what race you are.

My DH who is white British, was told to leave a pub by a black guy in Shropshire.

His precise words were:

“We don’t like no milk in our coffee here.”

That IS racism.

I didn't back down and got served first and stared them and the man out to show I wasn't being intimidated

In your original post you said you were intimidated and shaken up. You got over it quickly if you were squaring up to them, out-argued them to actually get served first and asked the barman to look at the cctv!

All 3 of them moaned to the OP about lack of staff but then later on, just 2.

And she still hasn't mentioned the result of the CCTV request.

But as long as some people are arguing now on the thread, I guess it's all good.

It’s true, no short young men are suffering emotional pain from heightism. Only poc can suffer from discrimination.

if you refuse to date someone because they are a poc, that’s an abomination.

if you refuse to date someone because of their height, that’s fine.

you seem To know what you’re talking about. In upside down land.

It doesn’t belong on the list. Nobody is entitled to a partner and adding it to the list suggests that men are.

People can be as selective as they like when it comes to who they choose to be romantically intimate with. Those same men will have physical criteria they reject women for.

It does not belong on the list. (And I extend that to ALL reasons that people may choose who they will and will not have sex with so now you look foolish.)

Palomiino · 07/07/2026 18:04

It could have been racism but it could also have been because you’re a woman (or both). I’ve had a big problem with men trying to shove in front of me at the Waitrose deli. I just don’t let them.

No it’s not. It isn’t very nice but white people can’t claim racism when white supremacy is still the default.

Atkinsondesperation · 07/07/2026 18:06

@JHound not worth my time. Not intelligent enough.

Do people really describe themselves as “ethnic”? The use of the word doesn’t even make sense in that way.

Tell me about the time you didn’t get a job because you’re white. Or people stared at you in a shop because you’re white.

I have only heard racists use it to describe others (especially white racists use it to describe non-white people).

It makes no sense though as everybody has an ethnicity.

It’s over. You’re a cultural ghost voice, flogging a dead horse, thinking it can still work to whine. Nope.

WhereYouLeftIt · 07/07/2026 18:12

"I felt this was due to me being mixed race."

  1. Not because you were a woman?
  2. Not because you were younger than them and should give way to your elders?
  3. Not because you weren't "from round here" and as a stranger /non-regular they felt you could damned well wait until the regulars had been served (the guy slamming his glass down sounds as if he's definitely a regular"?
  4. Not because there's a preferred point in the bar that those wishing to be served gravitate to and since you've never been there before you didn't know that?
No, you're going straight to thinking it's because you are mixed race.

I think presuming every hiccup (because a dispute about who's first is pretty minor) must be because of your skin colour is a very pessimistic way to live.

Sorry the UK is a racist country.
It has gotten worse in the last 5 years.

The same racists who call non white people all the names under the sun but then probably cheered when Jude Bellingham scored against Mexico on Monday 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣.

I was there first, simple.

The idiot next to me poked his big nose when it had nothing to do with him.

I was served first and asked them to review the CCTV.

Edited

If its ao racist leave and go live somewhere else?

The older couple didnt butt in front, they said they'd been waiting ages, the man was probably just being a misogynistic twat. Dont see anywhere why it would be down to race. It it was, youd have been served last???

AClassicTrenchcoat · 07/07/2026 18:15

Happens to me a lot. White middle aged woman, entered my invisibility years a while back.

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 07/07/2026 18:16

You asked them to check CCTV because you were at the bar first...

So many levels of crazy.

I'll wait for all the posts telling you that you're imagining things. That not everything in life is about your sex and age. That if this happens to you it's absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with sex or age, it's something else entirely. That the time for this nonsense about sexism and ageism is over, older women have cried wolf too often. Because this is not a sexist or ageist country and we're not buying it anymore.

This is such a lazy argument. Why must people leave their home just for wanting it to be better?

It’s funny how you are fine accepting it maybe OP’s gender but certainly not her race.

Snufkin88 · 07/07/2026 18:27

there really isn’t enough evidence here at all to say it is . I often get ignored at bars because I’m short , it’s so frustrating . Queues are annoying and can bring out the worst in people , it’s not necessarily racism.

JLou08 · 07/07/2026 18:32

It could have been, but I'd say probably not. British people are used to queues. They lose their manners and become selfish when it comes to bars that don't have people in an orderly line waiting to be served.
Most people are likely to defend the elderly too.

hattie43 · 07/07/2026 18:37

What a load of rubbish

IStillHearTheWaves · 07/07/2026 18:40

It could be, or it might not. This happens to lots of people every day.

Lots of rude people around in general though.
