TT substack: https://tribunaltweets.substack.com/p/tempest-vs-defra-and-rural-payments

Tempest (a TW) is claiming discrimination, harassment and/or victimisation on grounds of gender reassignment. Central to the claim is the existence of the Sex Equality and Equity Network in the Civil Service (SEEN). SEEN has been granted right to intervene. Parts of the original claim against the co-chair of SEEN (Elspeth Duemmer-Wrigley) and another party (Andreas Mueller) were struck out or narrowed. Another claimant, PQ, is no longer part of the case.
I will also note that Elspeth still has a garden in need of seeds and water to support the ability of SEEN to be an intervenor in this case. The claim originated because she said "only women menstruate" and a search with her name and those terms at the usual gardening website should point you to her plot.

J on this your conclusion on adequate steps to have an open platform, is that the conclusion of Harmon in his i/x report
SD yes, that was in his ix report, also ST's inability to provide with any further evidence

Very juicy!

NB's witness statement is a nice model of clarity and succinctness at 10 pages: compare with Tinkerbell's emotional drivel spread over 50.

PachacutisBadAuntie · 06/07/2026 22:37

Well that was a very refreshing read. And more informative than anything preceding it!

NebulousSupportPostcard · 06/07/2026 22:52

Is Janet Hughes on the list of witnesses?

I agree. I've just finished reading it and am impressed by her clear thinking and commitment to balancing the rights of all protected characteristics.

No, she isn't. She was 'loaned' by Defra to the Cabinet Office last summer. That came to an end a few weeks ago. She is now 'on sabbatical'.

How convenient

NebulousSupportPostcard · 06/07/2026 23:21

Thank you!

So she was on loan, but didn't want to be returned to DEFRA? Or did they forget to collect her at the end of the loan period? 🧐

This JH?

"I’ve always been drawn to boldness. I find boldness in others inspiring, infectious, empowering, creative and meaningful. I want to spend time around bold, honest, open people. I want to be inspired and empowered to boldness myself. I know I am at my best when I can feel the weird whoosh of terror and relief that comes from real, heartfelt boldness. And I don’t think you can lead a great team, or transform organisations or services without a healthy amount of boldness," she wrote.

The word bold has lost all meaning I've read it so much.

Presumably JH isn't going to be able to make the case that SEEN must be cast into outer darkness since she appears to have been a supporter of ST.

TheDisguiseOfReasonableness · 06/07/2026 23:39

So what question is HH going to batter NB with tomorrow?

”You met ST, you saw how upset ST was, why weren’t you willing to break the law, don’t you care about how upset ST was?” over and over again in a hundred different ways?

NebulousSupportPostcard · 06/07/2026 23:46

Google tells me a sabbatical in the CS is apparently an agreed unpaid career break from which you can return and be prioritised if a suitable job is available.

At that level I guess it depends on having friends in even higher places to funnel you into your next role?

AimsAndObjectives · 06/07/2026 23:57

First article:
The Cabinet Office has appointed a director from the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs as director general of civil service reform and efficiency.
Janet Hughes will move to the Cabinet Office from her current post as director of Defra's Future Farming and Countryside Programme in June.

Second article:
Cabinet Office director general Janet Hughes has announced she will be leaving the department shortly, with her loan from the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs coming to an end.

First article didn't mention anything about her being 'on loan'?🤔

I'll be cheering you all on from wherever I land next!

Sounds like it's one of those 'loans' where they don't really want you to come back😁

Also a note and a Youtube talk by Janet from 2019 here: https://www.nexerdigital.com/news-and-thoughts/5-minutes-with-janet-hughes/

Looks like she moves jobs a fair bit. I'm not entirely sure what the point of her talk is or who the target audience is or what the call to action might be - other than it is about "everything". The powerpoint slides are tooth-achingly awful. Personally I find a lot of .gov.uk to be terrible and apparently she is behind some of it. At about 20 minutes in, she describes a manifesto scheme to facilitate training based on a load of assumptions - which wasted £300m - and she appears completely unapologetic. She looks just like the sort of bull in a china shop that would ignore her boss and "boldly" fuck a lot of stuff up. Apparently do that enough and you get promoted in the CS. In the private sector you'd be out on your arse

ETA she thinks policy people are idiots

5 minutes with... Janet Hughes

Meet Janet - an influential major projects director at the Department for Education. Janet will be speaking about her work at Camp Digital 2019. We grabbed some time to get her thoughts ahead of the event.

Ah, is that the modern term for gardening leave? Organisations such as these carefully sideline folk who’ve behaved like this dont they.

I agree. Shame that Tamara Finkelstein didn’t also publish a video message to all staff celebrating women on International Women’s Day.

Always the special people who do exist and have been around forever and threw the first brick at Stonewall.

Apparently they also started the American revolution. Threw themselves in the harbour at Boston.
