Summer 2026 (1st June ~ start of meteorological Summer)

GloriaSmud · 02/06/2026 06:27

Yesterday (1st June) marked the start of meteorological summer (and the high temperatures last week were hot enough for some and enough to last the year!)

At the moment, the GFS thinks the first 10 days of June are looking unsettled and changeable, then slightly drier/warmer towards the end of next week but the unsettled theme still continues until the middle of the month.

Thoughts from Netweather (from a few days ago) and TheWeatherOutlook on what summer might have in store for us.

An early look ahead at what the UK summer may have in store

Ahead of the full summer forecast, an early look at what summer could have in store. One factor is a developing strong El Nino, which may have some influence.

The tall ships coming into New York harbour today. The heat haze was very noticeable. Apparently they have a heat dome on the North east coast too . It's crazy hot were comments made. Yesterday they had a terrible squall in the harbour boat mooring not holding so boats adrift . Some nifty helmsmen having to move as fast as possible in those conditions to avoid collision. So it's not just Europe.

Delatron · 05/07/2026 12:05

I can only hope we hover around the low 30s and preferably high 20s anything mid 30s is unbearable in this country especially if it’s for a prolonged period!

EmeraldRoulette · 05/07/2026 14:14

Is it just me that's struggling already? Although I do obviously have that thing of coming in from outdoors and walking into the flat and going "oh my God" because it's just like a freak event in here.

I can't believe there hasn't been more talk about it on here though. Although looking at the state of posters yesterday, either we've been invaded by crazy people or everyone is in a super bad mood.

It looks like 30+ going on for ages.

I read up on the whole "not sweating properly" thing. No
I am not Prince Andrew 😂 I've never been a particularly sweaty person but since losing weight, even less so - and I didn't lose that much weight!

Anyway, that apparently accounts for quite a lot of my discomfort. So that is new since last year. Have to start doing some cardio though when this is over.

no luck finding an office space within my price range or distance range. It's going to be a very long couple of weeks and of course it could go on longer than that.

I've been looking at MN thinking "how can I be the only one who has an issue with this?" but strangely also my neighbours are not complaining much. Normally, our WhatsApp group is full of complaints. I guess everyone's acclimatised or they can get their place to cool down in the evening?

justasking111 · 05/07/2026 14:36

I had a fan running over the bed all night last night. Couldn't have slept otherwise. I'm not a sweaty Betty either.

justasking111 · 05/07/2026 14:42

@EmeraldRoulette if you know anyone that works in an old building solicitor etc can you ask for a room X cost per day. Make sure it's north facing if possible. Where we live there's a parade of hotels on the seafront all north facing. I worked in one. We'd have people asking for a room for the day. They didn't need a bed just a desk and loo. Sometimes reception manager would do a sweet deal with a room hire charge.

What would be ideal is a river boat.

gingercat02 · 05/07/2026 14:58

It's bloody grey and cold in NE England, I don't want 30+ but we're off this week and I would like some warm sunshine 😭

EmeraldRoulette · 05/07/2026 14:58

@justasking111 the only clients I have are either working at home or working in central London. I am genuinely tempted to go stay in a hotel if this goes on for too long, but I think the nearest hotel has got wise to it because their rates are very high! It's not really a holiday destination so I'm assuming that's why they're so high. I've never looked at it before.

strangely, I had some meetings in an old building locally in last year's heat wave - it was absolutely boiling. It obviously depends where you are.

There's a couple of air-conditioned pubs I can go to, but after work, I'm probably better off in the garden - that might not be the case next week though. The sun vanishes from our garden - it's a communal garden - and shines directly on my flat till it goes down.

I do wonder if I'm in a bit of a heat pocket, what with seeing people using umbrellas to shield themselves from the sun even last week. I have been popping to that pub when possible and the barmaid said that lots of people she hasn't seen before are popping in just because of the air conditioning.

it's really annoying not just being able to get on with your normal stuff. I think it was
@Delatron who said it might as well be winter if you are having to hide indoors and I know exactly what she means.

I saw someone post on social media from Seahouses saying there was cloud but it was ice cream weather! I was puzzled because I thought they had much lower temperatures.

gingercat02 · 05/07/2026 16:34

Weather apps say 18 but it's windy and on and off drizzle.
Its always ice cream weather at the seaside.

Delatron · 05/07/2026 16:53

I’m hoping it’s correct that there’s a bit of a cool down (not much but maybe a bit or rain and around 26) the following week.

That would be a massive difference to the 34 we're expecting tomorrow and for most of the week really.

I thought you were in Essex as well?

Fingers crossed it's not actually 34. I'm slightly confused about today because we had cloud thank goodness.

Ah no I’m talking about the week after next. I’m obsessed as we are away and elderly parents are here with my dog and don’t want everyone to be uncomfortable!

Next week and up to the weekend looks around 31. Just hoping that doesn’t go up. I’m in Bucks.

EmeraldRoulette · 05/07/2026 18:30

@Delatron oh right I see

I thought you were in the same county as me. I was puzzled because it's very hot here. I'm going to have an early dinner and then go for a walk, but apparently it's still going to be 28 at 9 pm or something. Obviously it depends what website you look at.

neighbours have been waiting till about 9 pm for dog walks all week.

Delatron · 05/07/2026 19:19

It’s about 28 today. Dog goes out early morning as evenings tend to be warmer and don’t cool down that much!

So staring down the barrel of early dog walks next week. Would like this to not go on for weeks! I was so much more relaxed about heat before I got a dog!

GloriaSmud · 06/07/2026 06:20

So heatwave number 3 has arrived and it looks like as we head towards next weekend, temperatures in the south/some areas of the Midlands could be heading towards the mid-30sC. Looking at next week, at the moment those areas have temperatures wobbling around the upper 20s/30C mark, so slightly cooler. For those wanting much cooler conditions, Scotland is the place to be ~ they're looking at 20/21C. (There's a weather warning for heavy rain for a few hours this morning.)

Ugh, I'm already bored with it. I had a few plans for this week, but they will be unpleasant in high temperatures, so I won't be doing them. I'll just be doing lots of washing and getting it dry!

Delatron · 06/07/2026 18:15

It’s not quite as bad as last time- think the humidity isn’t as bad? Could do without it being so hot but I don’t think we quite have the heat dome situation as we did with the last heatwave.
and lots of wind today. Taking it day by day. Up early tomorrow with the dog. He has a new paddling pool which he is enjoying.

The humidity was certainly bad in London yesterday. I was tired all day and then I guessed it was very humid.

nannynick · 07/07/2026 19:21

7:20pm and it’s 30 degrees in west Surrey.
Temp is barely dropping and it’s the evening.
Please can someone send a thunderstorm my way, maybe that would help drop the temperature.

EmeraldRoulette · 07/07/2026 22:31

It's horrendous in Essex

@GloriaSmud any thoughts for the weekend over here? genuinely debating going away for the weekend, but my impression is the main days that are horrible are tomorrow and the day after.

justasking111 · 07/07/2026 23:00

Phoned my relatives in Sussex and Wimbledon tonight they're all watching Wimbledon, can't face going to bed

EmeraldRoulette · 07/07/2026 23:44

@justasking111I don't blame them

An actual puff of air came through the window just now! I am shocked. It was warm air, but it was air.

I'm not sure whether to pull out the sofa bed and sleep with the insanely noisy ancient aircon unit on. It sounds like a no brainer but it's massively noisy. It's very old. I really should've bought another but I don't generally buy stuff to replace unless something actually breaks.

I was puzzled that the neighbours aren't moaning. But there are several WhatsApp groups running now and I'm not on the really massive one for the whole development because it's too much - anyway, bumped into some on the way home and they are moaning on there. I thought it was really strange that I hadn't heard anything from them 😂

GloriaSmud · Yesterday 06:27

@EmeraldRoulette ~ the rest of the week, temperatures for Essex hover around the 30C/low 30sC mark. This weekend ~ it's looking a degree or two down, so high 20s. If you're looking to get away that's isn't too far to travel, the coast of North Norfolk looks ok ~ they're looking at temperatures around the low 20s mark (lucky them!)
