Summer 2026 (1st June ~ start of meteorological Summer)

GloriaSmud · 02/06/2026 06:27

Yesterday (1st June) marked the start of meteorological summer (and the high temperatures last week were hot enough for some and enough to last the year!)

At the moment, the GFS thinks the first 10 days of June are looking unsettled and changeable, then slightly drier/warmer towards the end of next week but the unsettled theme still continues until the middle of the month.

Thoughts from Netweather (from a few days ago) and TheWeatherOutlook on what summer might have in store for us.

An early look ahead at what the UK summer may have in store

Ahead of the full summer forecast, an early look at what summer could have in store. One factor is a developing strong El Nino, which may have some influence.

I think many forecasters are in agreement that sixth of July week is going to be pretty hellish

It would be good for me to figure out how hellish. I have been away for some of the heat wave and because of all the new build problems that are well documented here, it looks like a continual struggle for me because the place doesn't cool down unless it gets to 10° outside or something

So it's still freakishly hot air to breathe in here

Clearly, I will need use of an office for at least the next month so I will try and book that

But I have some freedom over my schedule and I do genuinely wonder if I ought to try and get out of the area for that week

The forecast of the same as we've had or higher is a real worry

it does mean I have to put the kibosh on any plans to do anything really - I don't travel well and I prefer not to rush about when transport is running normally so perhaps it's just better to accept that it will be a really horrible week - and hope that the same thing doesn't happen later in the summer

Not sure if it was this thread, but I think @Delatron said that it's no different than a really bad winter if you're forced to stay inside.

I mean, actually, this is harder in a way - but I do appreciate that I don't have the problems keeping warm that other people do.

last summer's heat waves were nothing like this bad. I think my area had four officially declared heat waves and while they were annoying, they weren't as bad as the last couple of days have been

Also, I think the building had a bit of time to recover in between, but now it doesn't

GloriaSmud · 29/06/2026 07:03

EmeraldRoulette ~ it's not a certainty yet but there's a possibility that next week is going to be really hot, GFS is saying 40C could be reached early next week for a lot of the midlands/south/east and SE so even if those sort of temperatures aren't reached for those areas, an office might be a good idea. As for getting away next week, it's really anywhere around the coasts, anywhere there's a breeze...

Yesterday's thoughts from Netweather on the weather for the next week or two....

Cooler and fresher in the week ahead, but will heat return in early July?

The next 5-6 days will see cooler, fresher conditions off the Atlantic, with some rain - mostly in the north. Signs of high pressure becoming more sustained from next weekend, with perhaps hot conditions returning the following week.

@GloriaSmud oh that's interesting that you're saying it too

My usual office space is fully booked - probs everyone booked it up last week

I'm checking out another one on Wednesday to keep your fingers crossed for me

there's no point going to one that doesn't have aircon and there's no point having one that that isn't a bus journey - if I have to deal with the train that would be pointless.

I really feel for the people working in these terrible conditions in situations they can't negotiate - one I've worked in went up to 39° in 2018. And then I had to commute home to my hot flat...on the Tube!

backformoreofthesame · 30/06/2026 21:20

Rain forecast all day today - heavy at times

think we had three drops

need to water the allotment again

why are the forecasts SO innacurate at the moment ?

GloriaSmud · 01/07/2026 06:37

We had rain last night, probably just enough to stop a watering session at the allotment but after today, there's nothing forecast so it'll be back to watering there again.

Looking at the GFS, heat is beginning to build as we head towards this weekend, especially (in a line) from the N.Midlands/N Wales southwards. In to next week, heat keeps building in those areas and then into the middle of next week, temperatures start hitting the upper 30s (Wales stays around the mid-upper 20sC) and that carries on towards the end of the week.

For those wanting cooler conditions, the coasts around Norfolk and Wales look ok or going further north, it won't be so hot in places like Yorkshire, Cumbria and Scotland.

@GloriaSmud I thought next weeks heat had been downgraded to more lower 30s not higher? ( I am praying I’ve read your update wrong!)

GloriaSmud · 01/07/2026 09:12

@socks1107 ~ the GFS is giving that as maximum temperatures at the moment (a few days ago, there were a few 40sC in there Shock.) When it comes to minimum temperatures, it's forecasting more mid 30sC so in a way, the GFS has downgraded on some of the really high temperatures it was going for a few days ago. If a heatwave is on the cards, I'm hoping it's more the lower/mid 30s as well ~ getting close to 40C is a bit much!

OP posts:
Delatron · 01/07/2026 09:40

I find there is such a huge difference between 30 and mid 30s. Hoping the forecasts that hover around 30 and high 20s are correct. Also praying for a cool down after with some rain.

trying29 · 01/07/2026 09:45

the most recent GFS update is back to 38 at teh end of next week again....

Theseagullsarenowclouds · 01/07/2026 10:25

Actual shit 😬. We're going to Pitbull at Hyde Park and have to get the train home next week.

Pixiedust1234 · 01/07/2026 11:01

That forecast for next week can get in the bin. I'm really enjoying this cooler weather and I even managed to get some shoes on yesterday for a walk! (Swollen ankles/feet due to that ridiculous hot weather 😩).

Delatron · 01/07/2026 11:26

In terms of planning is it Thursday and Friday that are the hottest days next week?

GloriaSmud · 01/07/2026 12:21

Delatron ~ at the moment, for the London/SE area, both days look about equal (30-35C both days.) Thursday though, the heat area is larger so the Midlands/East Anglia have temperatures ranging from 28-31C whereas Friday, those areas are slightly 'cooler,' more 25-31C. After that (from the weekend of 11/12th July), things cool down a little but temperatures for the Midlands/Wales southwards still look to be in the 25C-30C range (but as always, that's a long way away in terms of forecasting!..)

OP posts:
Delatron · 01/07/2026 12:29

Thanks @GloriaSmud that helps. Hoping it’s not a prolonged spell of heat!

Edited

Crikey!! I mean we wanted a nice summer but last week was stifling in the southeast I was hoping we wouldn’t get a repeat 😂

GloriaSmud · 02/07/2026 07:18

We've had some unexpected heavy rain showers this morning, which saves having to water things.

I know it was awful last week, socks1107. I was lucky enough to be on the Yorkshire coast for a few days last week but even with the sea breeze, it was still a bit hot some days.

The latest GFS (same area as yesterday ~ Midlands/N Wales southwards), has temperatures ranging from upper 20s to mid 30s towards the end of next week but from Wednesday onwards, the north and Scotland heat up as well and they could see mid-upper 20sC. As often happens when we get some heat, a few thunderstorms might be set off, especially towards the end of next week....

OP posts:
EmeraldRoulette · 02/07/2026 10:38

@GloriaSmud any thoughts from Wednesday onwards, please?

Having a lot of difficulty securing a workspace. I thought there would be more available through the school holidays but no

The prices I'm looking at now, pretty bad.

I'm still struggling because the flat is boiling so it's like sleeping in the sauna every night and then I feel crap all morning.

GloriaSmud · 02/07/2026 12:05

@EmeraldRoulette ~ next week is a warm week but Wednesday onwards, temperatures wobble around the 30C mark. At the moment, Wednesday ~ 30C-33C, Thursday (slightly cooler) ~ 23-27C, Friday ~ 28-30C. Saturday might be slightly warmer ~ the GFS thinks 28-33C.

So not really the sort of temperatures you want to see ~ hope you find a workspace soon. (I found some tips here for coping with heatwaves ~ might be some help?)

@GloriaSmud thank you

There seems to be an awful lot of debate about this, nobody really knows - I suppose that's a statement of the bleeding obvious, sorry!

Delatron · 04/07/2026 09:31

I’m hoping for a cool down and some rain the following week? Too far ahead to tell? So week of the 13th July.

My parents are looking after my dog (with walkers coming) would like it it not to be too uncomfortable for them!
