Pedants' corner

Reno is a town in the USA...

I've finally cracked on this one. Reno (capitalised) is a town in Nevada, whilst if one is trying to use the barstardisation of the word 'renovation', i.e. 'reno', and it's not at the beginning of a sentence, it should not, in any place anywhere in the universe, be capitalised.
Thank you.
I realise this post will change nothing and I will still see things like 'How much will my Reno of my 3 bedroom house cost?' but, oh well, I've at least said it. 😂

It’s an auto correct. People probably don’t think it’s important enough to argue with the spell checker as it will change it around 3 times before it gives in. That’s if they notice.

AgentPidge · 29/06/2026 10:28

I don't move in your house-reno circles - and even there, autocarrot was trying very hard to capitalise reno - but as a fellow pedant, I feel your pain. May I also suggest that if reno comes at the beginning of a sentence, it should be written in full? (Like numbers are.) Renovation of my house starts on Tuesday (I wish!).

I don't think you'll win this one. :(

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 29/06/2026 10:29

I know it's an autocorrect. Personally I correct my incorrect autocorrects whenever I can, but I know most people don't. It's just I see this one so much now I think a whole generation of people are going to think Reno is correct for renovation and I cannot bear it.
That's hyperbole obviously; I will bear it with immense fortitude. But, sigh. I hate it. 😂

No I won't win it.
But I've said my piece and it's now on t'internet forever hopefully.
So I'm on record as protesting this Reno malarkey. 😂

I worked in Nevada for a year in the 1990s. Reno used to be famous for quickie divorces.

What, did people reno their Reno houses and divorce from the stress?

mumumental · 29/06/2026 10:37

Who uses the word “reno ” anyway? I have renovated a few houses and never heard it, except once here.

Oh yeah, we have to fight the fight even if it does feel futile. The pedants are revolting!

Italiangreyhound · 29/06/2026 10:40

Ha ha I have just watched the episode of Frasier where Niles and Daphne get married in Reno!

TinyBlueDent · 29/06/2026 10:43

8/10 OP. A true pedant would have correctly stated that Reno is a city, not a town. 😉

MotherofPufflings · 29/06/2026 10:43

I agree with you, but look at any Facebook renovation group and it pales into insignificance. You wouldn't know that we have compulsory education in this country from the appalling SPAG on there - and the issue is very much not confined to young people either!

PetiteParakeet · 29/06/2026 10:43

The abbreviation ‘reno’ is pretty niche! More annoying is autocorrect targeting common words. My phone always insists on capitalising ‘may’ and autocorrects ‘well’ to ‘we’ll’ every bloody time.

Oh I love that episode and I'd forgotten it was Reno! Might see if I can catch a watch of that. Love Miles and Daphne. Poor Donnie though. He didn't deserve it!

Yes I get both of those, oh May for may, I think that started around the time Theresa May was PM? So annoying. 🙄

Ha, I did look it up and I saw that it was a city and I considered changing it! I'm duly hoist by my own petard. 😂

I'm surprised people think reno is niche, I see it on here most days but I do enjoy the diy/property and home decoration boards and it does crop up a lot.

Mine used to be a bastard for changing “ill” to “I’ll” - regardless of context. The other bad one was male being changed to Male, because the latter is the capital of the Maldives. Except it isn’t - it’s Malé so the ‘correction’ wasn’t even accurate.

Grin

The history of the Reno quickie divorce is actually fascinating. It was started by the Nevada legislature as an economic driver during the Depression, by making the amount of time you had to be resident in order to divorce six weeks rather than the six months that was usual elsewhere, and requiring little or no real proof of the reasons for the divorce.

It was hugely successful to the point where 'divorce migration' carried Nevada through the depression, with a huge boom in building permits from people opening guesthouses for divorce migrants to live in for the necessary six weeks, some lavish hotels for the richer ones, or dude ranches so people waiting out their six weeks could relax and ride horses etc. And because Nevada also had very lax marriage requirements (none of the blood tests, waiting periods etc needed in many other states, hence the 'Las Vegas wedding chapel' industry), often a judge would rubberstamp a divorce in the morning and marry the divorcé/e to someone new in the afternoon.

It only stopped being a thing in more recent decades when other states similarly liberalised their divorce laws.

So there's a slight renovation angle to the Reno migratory divorce industry. If you squint.

Several works of popular fiction used the 'fact' that these divorces were not recognised in all states. Or in other countries.

"... barstardisation ..."? Do you mean bastardisation?

RaraRachael · 29/06/2026 11:17

I taught a child called Rino. I assumed it might be pronounced as in rhino but it was Reno as in the place name.

That’s ok, a thread in Pedants’ Corner should obey Muphry’s Law.

Good Lord, that (capitalised obviously 😂) is the acronym for 'Republican in name only'. Fancy lumbering a child with it as a name. 😱

To be honest, it's slips like these that stop me from posting here more often. I just know I'll show myself up somehow.😊
