Frankie or Brynn for baby girl?

I prefer Frankie but my concern is it's more popular. We like uncommon names.
Brynn is very uncommon in our country.

OP posts:

And you've just reminded me why I never usually post on these forums. People have a real hard time being kind huh.

They're being kind to the girl who will have to live with your choice of name and spelling for her entire life.

Arlanymor · 05/07/2026 23:18

Frankie is fine - Frankie Bridge after all. But please don't bastardise the Welsh language by randomly adding on the letter 'n' to Bryn, it's disrespectful.

WaneyEdge · 05/07/2026 23:19

mathanxiety · 05/07/2026 22:04

They do not live in Wales.

I doubt she will be bothered.

It’s also a small town in Greater Manchester.

MaybeItWasMe · 05/07/2026 23:20

Both awful. As the majority of posters have said. But no doubt you’ll give one to the poor child anyway.

Arlanymor · 05/07/2026 23:20

WaneyEdge · 05/07/2026 23:19

It’s also a small town in Greater Manchester.

But that is spelt with only one 'n' isn't it?

hugasaurus · 05/07/2026 23:21

I think Uncle Bryn has kind of poisoned that well. It’s the first thing I thought when I saw it, even with the added n, and it’s such an enduring pop culture reference in this country with an unusual name.

SemperIdem · 05/07/2026 23:23

Frankie if you must.

Using names from other cultures incorrectly, misspelling them too, is ignorant.

FrothyCothy · 05/07/2026 23:24

Frankie is fine but with a full given name -Frances or Francesca or something like that. If you’re in England then Brynn would be a no from me, it’s uncle Bryn all the way.

BloodyRoses · 05/07/2026 23:24

Brynn over Frankie.

MN has a thing for names and being spelt traditionally. My DC name is spelt different and they love it. Doesn't bother them to have to spell it out etc. I've got a traditional name, spelt bog standard, and always have to spell it anyway.

Floppyearedlab · 05/07/2026 23:25

MyIcyHeart · 05/07/2026 22:19

Bryn for a Welsh boy is rather lovely.
Brynn for a girl is a really poor choices, lacking in class/taste.

This
It is very much a boy’s name. Why not have Bryony for a girl. Or Breanna

Notajogger · 05/07/2026 23:25

Neither. Particularly not misspelling Bryn, she'll be assumed to be a boy her whole life and have her name spelled incorrectly or called Bryan.

Gothamcity · 05/07/2026 23:26

I don't like either, but I understand you're asking for which one to go for. (You'd probably hate my girls names as they're feminine, traditional girls names) In which case, obviously it has to be Frankie as at least it's widely used and perfectly useable as a girls name. Brynn is god awful, (not actually even a known name spelt like that) it will get spelt wrong (right) more often than not, people will assume she's a he, and she'll probably not thank you for it long term.
Alternatives if you want something unisex but widely used as a girls name: Sydney, Juno, Brooke, Raye, Quinn, Robyn?

fashionqueen0123 · 05/07/2026 23:37

All I can think of is Uncle Bryn.

Why would you choose that?! There are so many lovely girl names out there

Corgi2023 · 05/07/2026 23:47

How about you go into Starbucks and place an order with each of those names and see how you get on?
I personally don't like Brynn.

Firebird83 · 05/07/2026 23:59

Frances “Frankie”

SpottyAlpaca · 06/07/2026 00:07

Neither. Brynn is the Welsh variant of Brian. A male name.

Frankie is also a boy’s name (eg Dettori) could be a nn for Francesca, which is at least an actual girl’s name.

The whole point of posting here is that a bunch of anonymous strangers will actually be honest with you about names and tell you what they really think. In this case, that calling a little girl Brynn is a ridiculous idea. Your friends & family won’t. They will be nice & polite & tactful & tell you what they think you want to hear because they care about you.

Ohforfluffssake · 06/07/2026 01:00

I quite like Brynn. So much so I used it 6 years ago for my fox red Labrador bitch. I prefer that to Frankie for a girl but there are so many Frankie's at the moment.

WaneyEdge · 06/07/2026 09:16

Arlanymor · 05/07/2026 23:20

Yes, but people will automatically assume it’s the same unless you say “two ‘N’” whenever saying it to strangers.

Mycatmax · 06/07/2026 09:22

Francesca is nice.

Brynn is not.

We are being kind. Brynn is awful.
It's a nice enough name for a man, if spelt properly - there are plenty of them aged 60 or thereabouts in Wales - Bryn Terfel, Bryn Williams and Uncle Bryn, for example.

Frankie is OK if short for Francesca or Frances, but I'd think it was a boy's name. (Frankie Dettori, Frankie Boyle, Frankie Valli)

@SpottyAlpaca , Brynn and Brian are not variants of the same name.

Inmyuggs · 06/07/2026 10:16

Brynn yes has 2 n's for a girl.
I like Frankie, it has a savvy sounding upbeat name.
Brynn i find a little flat.
Either way it is your choice!
Your choosen name sounds good spoken out and with other family and the surname is the main thing I was looking at not opnions.
Isnt any baby gorgeous whatever the name anyway.

Watchoutfortheslowaraf · 06/07/2026 10:21

Are you American? I have seen the name Brynn before on dance moms I think it was.

i think a pp has nailed it. It’s like calling a baby girl Colinn

if you’re in the UK, do not pick Brynn. USA you can maybe get away with it.

to me, Bryn will always be an older Welsh blokes name

user1492757084 · 06/07/2026 13:47

I voted Brynn though I would not use it myself.
Do you like Briellen. Frances?

DoughnutDreamer · 06/07/2026 14:17

You should go with the name you like best rather than trying to avoid one that is slightly more popular. I don’t want to be mean or snappy so sorry if it sounds this way…but this need to name your (generic you) child something unusual or uncommon to the detriment of choosing a likeable or usable name is just silly. This isn’t just about you OP, I see it in here all the time. A list of far-out, whacky, weird or ridiculous names just to make your child stand out is silly and pretentious. People should go with what they like. So if you prefer Frankie then go for Frankie.
