Thoughts on the baby name Knowledge with a surname like Smith

Me and my partner really like the name "Knowledge" for a boy. I'm curious to see what other people think of this name choice.

Knowledge Jamie Smith (our last name is very similar to Smith)

Jamie is the middle name because his father's name is James.

I think it holds a warm and curious energy. What do you guys think?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Supersleepysheepy · 13/06/2026 05:30

Tricky one I think. At school they will use a 'knowledge organiser' and will talk constantly about recalling your knowledge etc. I think that could be awkward for a young child.

DryTerryandJUNE · 13/06/2026 05:32

Do you have Zimbabwean heritage? Knowledge is used as a name there (but so is Punishment). I've heard nicer names, but obviously that subjective.
Otherwise it's a strange choice.

Blueuggboots · 13/06/2026 05:59

You can’t like the name Knowledge because it’s not a name!!!!

"It's Wolfie, Mum!" 🤣

I think that's the main problem. Being given Subject Knowledge Organisers, lesson starters with Knowledge Recall etc.
You may as well call him Learning.

Ever heard of Encyclopedia Brown?

Middle name Brittanica

Soontobe60 · 13/06/2026 06:12

Quite a few of the children in my school who are from Nigerian families have names like Blessing, Precious, Prince, Beauty, Goodluck and Power. All big names to live up to. These are their “English” names - their Nigerian names are far more beautiful. Knowledge sounds similar.

Punishment???

I know a bloke called Godstime & a couple of women called Comfort. But Punishment as a name….

Nursemumma92 · 13/06/2026 06:19

Please don't.

CeciliaMars · 13/06/2026 06:30

Heylittlesongbird · 13/06/2026 06:44

You have reminded me of a little ditty my dd said in primary school.

Girls go to college to get more knowledge
Boys go to Jupiter to get more stupider

Have you considered Jupiter as an alternative?

ThatCosy · 13/06/2026 06:44

I think it's pretentious.

caringcarer · 13/06/2026 06:49

Put Jamie as his first name and knowledge as his middle name. Your poor little boy if you saddle him with knowledge. He will be 6 before he can spell his own name.

Smartiepants79 · 13/06/2026 06:54

Are you white British? I have taught one or two children over the years with similar names but their families came from countries on the African continent. In England it would highly unusua.
I really wouldn’t if I was you.

Morepositivemum · 13/06/2026 06:56

Overtheatlantic
I think this would work in some cultures but if you don’t have a connection to those cultures then it wouldn’t. Try looking at the Greeks for inspiration. Homer, Augustus, names like that?

Homer Simpson, Augustus Gloop. I’m sorry, I had to!!!!

CocoaTea · 13/06/2026 06:58

@Sweethearttttttt

are you Zimbabwean by any chance?

disturbia · 13/06/2026 06:58

This has to be a wind up! Nobody is that unkind to call a child Knowledge.

Ah snap re Zim names @DryTerryandJUNE

@EmpressaurusKitty naming the child Punishment would likely have been a coded message to someone else in the family….

Crikey.

Fiddlesticks1 · 13/06/2026 07:04

Let’s hope and pray it’s a girl.

SparklyGlitterballs · 13/06/2026 07:04

It's not a baby name, it's a noun.

Once he's at school he'll become Nolly or Ledgie or similar.

I despair how people with standard names like Jamie can come up with a nonsense name like Knowledge and think it sounds edgy (maybe 'edgy Ledgie' could become his NN?)

JulietteHasAGun · 13/06/2026 07:05

iogo · 13/06/2026 04:27

I think using abstract nouns like this for names is ridiculous. What will you do if he turns out to be stupid?

Quite possibly the OP comes from a culture where these sort of names are fairly common. I see a lot of students of African heritage with these type names. I don’t think it’s fair to term them all as ridiculous.

FeistyFrankie · 13/06/2026 07:08

He will get bullied relentlessly, and depending on your own ethnicity, one could argue there is some cultural appropriation going on here as well

ThatBlueJumper · 13/06/2026 07:09

On mumsnet people love to cherry pick cultures you can and can’t take names from.
Lots of children have names from different cultures. Greek and Norse names are popular right now. But baby names come from everywhere these days and will continue to do so.
I know some white British children called Promise, Peace, Memory.
I like Knowledge personally.
