AIBU to hammer on the walls when neighbours are noisy?

I have neighbours who think nothing of putting on a washing load at midnight, and generally behaving utterly selfishly with regards to noise.

I have asked politely if they could be mindful. Their response was to let me know when they are going to do noisy activities, as though that makes it ok.

AIBU to take to hammering on the walls each and every time they annoy me? I have been doing this for a few days now.

The first few times, they knocked on my door to say that they were disturbed by my hammering to which I replied that they had disturbed me with their noise so I decided to do my own diy to co-ordinate with their noise.

This afternoon, they were playing loud music and so I started hammering. They knocked on my door but I ignored them.

AIBU?

I mean there’s a difference between a washing machine going and you actively behaving aggressively with a hammer. You’ll probably find they make noise complaints against you, which will be valid because, you know, you’re hammering walls! I appreciate that you’ve tried to speak to them but are you expecting them not to use the washing machine at all? I’m not sure what you’re expecting them to do. It’s unreasonable to expect them not to wash their clothes and bedding etc. It’s normal household noise. Music in the afternoon is also reasonable noise. I suspect hammering on purpose is unreasonable noise and so it’s going to be you that’s in the wrong here, not them.

Bring it on! I welcome them to complain about my noise. I am literally only making noise when they are. Like I said, tit for tat. Doesn’t make me right I know. But it makes me feel a helluva lot better knowing that they are disturbed as much as they disturb me. I am fine with normal bay to day noise. But washing machines on at midnight is NOT acceptable when you are sharing a wall/floors

My 80 year old gran's new neighbour has told her to turn her fan off at night as it disturbs them. It's a regular fan very quiet. She's now worried about getting into a conflict and planning to turn it off at night, which is exactly what an 80 year old shouldn't be doing in a heatwave. Some people are ridiculous. Live next door to people you will hear them, a washing machine is not unreasonable noise.

pimplebum · 04/07/2026 22:12

if you cant move then think about installing sound proofing in the cavity because either your house is badly built or you are excessively sound sensitive

why would a washing machine bother you in your bedroom??? surely their kitchen and your bedroom are nor side by side ??

Bobblesandwool · 04/07/2026 22:13

Hammer away, and hammer louder, having lived next to noisy neighbours from hell, I wish I had the guts to do this! If they can make the noise, surely they can get a taste of their own medicine!!

Bring WHAT on ??? Do you want war or a resolution???

whippersnapper55 · 04/07/2026 22:15

You can keep hammering on the wall but it's unlikely to stop them making noise. If the last tenants left because of the noise, it's obviously been an ongoing issue. Rather than escalate the stand off, I would probably record the noise levels, keep a diary and report them to the council for noise pollution.

A fan is very different to the spin cycle on a washing machine. Use your brain.

Wow, you are incredibly rude. I can’t see AT ALL why your neighbours won’t bow down to your demands. You probably speak to them the way you have spoken to people on here

Music on a Saturday afternoon is normal day to day noise

You need to get a detached house.

Another poster who asks AIBU but doesn't actually want an answer that doesn't agree with them so turns to insults instead.

Boring

Why the yawning emoji? Its true! Like many have said if you cant afford a detached you need to accept the neighbours around you its life dude, deal with it xxx

ThisWiseRobin · 04/07/2026 22:26

Forgive me if someone has suggested this before, but to perhaps salvage the situation can you have a reset here.
Is there anything that you have in common with them. Anything that can bridge this divide which is getting wider.
I live in a tiny mill workers cottage, 15 in a row, all joined together, no cavity walls, the sound just travels between houses.
First week my neighbour was playing music with the doors open. I said I loved her music and we had similar tastes.
We ended up bring great friends, and now if either side is going to make a noise, we invite them along.
It may be worth a try, your current solution is going nowhere.
I wish you well.

Or maybe use your manners?

IMO you're making problems for yourself further down the line.

If you ever want to move you will have to declare any disputes with neighbours and not revealing that info could invalidate your sale.

Antagonising your already "awkward" neighbours could cause an escalation of their bad behaviour. If they are not prepared to respond to polite requests and be reasonable they might take things further.

I've known people have red paint thrown at their front door and weedkiller poured on the lawn.

Tbf OP could do that back too.

I’m not going to dignify the now hackneyed MC Hammer reference - we’re not looking to go into MN Classics - but I bid you all goodnight. The good, the bad and the unintentionally amusing.
