AIBU to hammer on the walls when neighbours are noisy?

I have neighbours who think nothing of putting on a washing load at midnight, and generally behaving utterly selfishly with regards to noise.

I have asked politely if they could be mindful. Their response was to let me know when they are going to do noisy activities, as though that makes it ok.

AIBU to take to hammering on the walls each and every time they annoy me? I have been doing this for a few days now.

The first few times, they knocked on my door to say that they were disturbed by my hammering to which I replied that they had disturbed me with their noise so I decided to do my own diy to co-ordinate with their noise.

This afternoon, they were playing loud music and so I started hammering. They knocked on my door but I ignored them.

AIBU?

Assuming your aim is to encourage them to be noisy to piss you off further, yeah go right ahead.

LifeOfAShowgirl13 · 04/07/2026 20:00

I think you need a detached home

ScrambledEggs12 · 04/07/2026 20:02

Do they have a very loud washing machine? We often put ours on at night since we moved to a tariff with cheaper electricity at night. It doesn't disturb me (definitely won't disturb neighbours though as on the unattached side of the house).

Thanks for the pointless response

Oof, no, never the wall banging!

I do empathise though as we have some pretty sociable neighbours on one side. They do stop making noise at about midnight though usually and it is only on weekends so could be worse.

Yes. It shakes the walls and floor

What makes you think you can decide how others live in their own home?

LakieLady · 04/07/2026 20:04

Just go and have a conversation with them, ffs.

They won't know what's pissing you off unless you do.

PancakeCloud · 04/07/2026 20:05

Are you very noise sensitive? I also think you sound like you need a detached home

Ineffable23 · 04/07/2026 20:05

I almost always put my washing machine on at night - I can easily sleep through it and it's in my house, so it has never occurred to me it might be a problem for anyone else. I have also never heard my neighbour's washing machine. If you're in a flat, is it possible their washing machine hasn't been properly leveled? That can make them much noisier and I can see it could be an issue if you are beneath them.

If it's loud music or whatever I can totally understand it, but I do think things like washing machine noise are just part of day to day life.

AgnesX · 04/07/2026 20:09

Unless they're decent people they won't give a toss. Take a lot of deep breaths and try and have a calm conversation before going off on one. I do empathise btw.

I have. Several times. Very politely. But their response has been to let me know when they are going to be making noise. For example, their family is staying and will need to use the washing machine all night etc

Yes, I agree. And that is why I have taken to hammering. But then they have the gall to knock on my door to say it’s disturbing them!

Next time the washing machine goes on, go knock for them to come and have a listen from inside your house. Also suggest they check the machine is levelled correctly. Our drying sounded like it would take-off when not level.

They may be more considerate if they hear what you’re hearing.

They are not denying the noise - apparently the previous tenant complained all the time

Carry on banging then if that’s what you want to do, although obviously it’s not going to make a difference.

Do they don’t always use it at night?

Also why can’t they play music in the afternoon?

I get you totally, people don’t care anymore about others.my neighbour slams doors when he gets up at 6 am or 5am.i could kill him.i used to slam doors back at bedtime, made no difference unfortunately .we don’t make lots of noise, watch tv in the evening and go to bed quietly.my other neighbour wants to play loud crappy music every time she goes in the garden.i love being in the garden and long for peace even just for an hour.

It makes a difference in that it clearly annoys them. Why should it all be one way?

The suggestions that you move are actually worth considering. This is not going to improve and banging on the walls will not do anything to help.

Senso · 04/07/2026 20:46

Nope. I’m not going to move. I love my home. I am going to make them as aware of the noise they make as I am

What is the point of your post then if you aren't going to change ?
