To think England should get a bank holiday this coming Monday?

Since England's World Cup game with Mexico is at 1am Monday morning, it seems only fair that we should get a bank holiday Monday, since Scotland got one for their World Cup game that was in the early hours of a Sunday morning. It would be a nice thing for Keir Starmer to do as one of his final acts as PM.

England vs Mexico in the Azteca stadium at the World Cup is a once in a lifetime event. The last time England even played in the stadium was 40 years ago and that was against Argentina, not Mexico. People who watched the game will remember it for the rest of their days, well worth going to work feeling a bit tired for 1 day.

It’s a mid tournament match - it’s not ‘once in a lifetime’.

I have asked around my colleagues and it seems two watched it live or highlights - that’s a very small percentage of the people I work with.

The others saw the result on the news or whatever. I don’t know anyone who thinks it’s ’once in a lifetime’. What makes it that? Is there some particular significance to that match?

Where do you work?
Obviously in a very different place to me.
Many have said it’s been the best England game since 1966, so quite a game.

GimmieABreakOr3 · 07/07/2026 16:49

Once in a lifetime may be for the semi finals or the final, sure!

"once in a lifetime"
Repeated every 4 years.
With 10-14 matches or so to get to final for each team.

You're talking about the world cup in general, the specific circumstances of that match quite probably will have been once in a lifetime

There are too many variables for those circumstances and the nature of the game to be repeated

I work in an environment where the employees are more likely to watch the rugby.

It would only have been ‘quite the game’ for people who are specifically interested in football and therefore could arsed to watch it.

And does the venue really make it ‘once in a lifetime’? Will anyone remember in 5-10 years’ time?

The World Cup is relevant only if you are into football. Maybe watching some mid tournament match played in Mexico from your living room counts as a once in a lifetime experience - that’s great, fill your boots.

But at least be realistic about its national and long term significance.

We are more about Sport. Love football, love rugby, love tennis etc.
Football is a game played in all countries, watched by billions.
you can live in a third world country, grab a ball and play a game of football.
Rugby still tends to be played by more affluent countries. Even today not all UK schools offer rugby.
And we are not mid tournament. We are in the final EIGHT.

Be as pedantic as you like (but it is still mid way as it’s not the beginning or the end. My point is that if you don’t like football, you aren’t going to care. Even in the unlikely event we win, it’s not an event of national importance - people will get shitfaced for a few days and then get on with their lives.

There are sports I have enjoyed over the years (and have sat up all night to watch) but I don’t expect everyone else to share my enthusiasm.

I don’t get why football fans seem to think that everyone likes it.

It will have National Importance.
It would be a huge celebration.
if you don’t have any respect for the game then why are you so opinionated?
And just to educate you, as you obviously don’t have a clue, we are 85% through the World Cup.
Not mid way.
And the rugby World Cop when England won? We were in West Africa and had an amazing night. In fact we partied through the night.

So do you not have an opinion on anything you don’t like?

Why is telling me it’s 85% through such a ‘gotcha’? I’m glad because it means there’s not very long to go though.

I used to like rugby. We had to have the rugby on the TV where i used to work on the day of the final - I was out in town that afternoon and it was just a normal day.

What do you think will change if we win the World Cup? The country will still be in a state, the only change will be a few people will get excited for a few hours.

Anarchy99 · 07/07/2026 19:01

And that’s why I am so ‘opinionated’ - many people find it boring as fuck and yet people like to pretend it means something for everyone in the general scheme of things.

@lovecotswoldsliving If you are ‘sorry to say’ it then perhaps don’t say it. And disagreeing with something does not make someone worthy of being personally insulted.

igelkott2026 · Yesterday 09:38

Being in the last eight is respectable, it isn't anything to be really excited about. It will save Tuchel's job (and yes, I know he has a contract to the Euros but contracts can end). After the match against Mexico, he was a hero. After the last 32 game, he was close to losing this job. The hyperbole is nonsensical.

We won't make the final because we'd probably have to play Argentina in the semi, and we know from the fix last night that FIFA want Messi in the final.

And nobody is saying you can't celebrate and enjoy it, but it's not a once in a lifetime event and it's not worth a bank holiday. Not even if we win. Nobody deserves to have operations and medical procedures cancelled because a bunch of lads kicked a ball around more successfully than another bunch of lads did.

Don’t you have annual leave and evenings off in your job then? Sounds tiring (although apparently it’s not stopping you either).

You can carry on coming after me if it helps. But your previous personal attack was reported and deleted so perhaps it might be better for you to ignore my comments as they seem to make you insult people 🤷‍♀️

Well a few people at work didn't actually watch it live - some because it ended up being delayed by an hour. But they at least watched the highlights. And nearly everyone I know stopped up to watch it. And why not? It was a once in a lifetime event.

You do realise that England, unlike Scotland, seems to qualify for a world cup every 4 years? Lord knows the rest of the UK has been hearing about 1966 any time a world cup is mentioned since, well 1966!

I knew you would.
typical.
You go for the attack and say really unkind things about people who like football. But can’t take it back.
if you are on annual leave you can try and learn about football.

I have what exactly?

I haven’t attacked anyone personally. You on the other hand have (hence the deletion). I try to avoid personal attacks as I am AUDHD and understand that things can be read wrongly.

I have just pointed out that it’s worth remembering that not everyone lives and breathes football and that it’s a personal interest rather than something of historical importance to the entire country.

Your final paragraph is a bit odd - do you spend your free time reading up on things that have no relevance to you?

Silverbirchleaf · Yesterday 19:33

Let’s have a bank holiday for Arthur Frey’s semi final tennis match. A Brit in the semi final, a much rarer event!

JenniferBooth · Yesterday 19:38

I live a three to five minute walk from a pub that was open for the England/Mexico match The fans were very considerate when it finished because i heard not a peep
