To think England should get a bank holiday this coming Monday?

OonaStubbs · 01/07/2026 20:16

Since England's World Cup game with Mexico is at 1am Monday morning, it seems only fair that we should get a bank holiday Monday, since Scotland got one for their World Cup game that was in the early hours of a Sunday morning. It would be a nice thing for Keir Starmer to do as one of his final acts as PM.

Im finding the news reporting on this ridiculous, companies allowing people to start at 11am etc. Meanwhile I had to take an entire day annual leave for my daughters one hour sports day, but obviously if its for a male pursuit like men's football let's just close the company for two hours!
Glad people are enjoying it though its good to find joy but its not even the sodding final!

plomh · 05/07/2026 16:24

Good news- pub is not opening for the match
Bad news - three doors down, a guy who watches tv from outside has bought a projector screen

Still going to use earplugs

No my employer hasn’t changed our working hours.

Also if starting at 11am, instead of 9am, it’s only fair to work til 7pm

Our Bank Holidays are set in stone. You can see years in advance where they fall.
So not sure why your medical team could not do the same.
Very occasionally we get an extra one. But it’s very rare.

Yes I know that! Obviously we could see they were coming up, but nevertheless as my DH's chemo was scheduled for a Monday it always caused a problem and he had to be squeezed in elsewhere on the calendar somehow and it was awkward. The chemo schedules are not done far in advance, often he wouldn't even get them until the week before the new schedule was due to start, and a bank holiday meant it got pushed to a different weekday which clashed with work or other commitments, so yes actually they were a pain in the arse - despite the fact we knew they were coming.

plomh · 05/07/2026 16:30

Mexico have only lost 2 competitive matches out of 89 - since the stadium opened in 1970

Oh I don't think anyone's mentioned that before. Next you'll be telling us the stadium is at a higher altitude than normal Grin.

Did get a BH for QEII’s funeral. That was part of Operation London Bridge. Also as she died in Scotland, Operation Unicorn was activated too

I’m reeling from the fact businesses seem to care more about a World Cup match than a school sports day.

I wouldn't lose sleep over how much a bank holiday costs the UK economy if I was you.

Wait until you find out how much money the UK government literally pisses away.

You do realise that the Government doesn't pay for the bank holiday right? You do understand that wages for bank holidays are paid by individual businesses up and down the length and breadth of England and Wales. Businesses still trying to get back on their feet after COVID, the cost of living crisis, increases in employers NI, etc. You also realise that this is not just wages but also lost production days so they're paying twice, once for the wages and once for the lost production, missed deadlines, and the ensuing fall out. This is a heavy burden on businesses and should not be dismissed lightly.

Idonthavea · 05/07/2026 20:30

This.

an extra days holiday id lose and I think I only have 2 left. Thanks to young children, I don’t have any whole weeks off work this year as instead of losing pay when they’ve been ill I’ve taken it as leave! Bloody burnt out! Don’t need more bank holidays swallowing more leave

Perhaps where you live. Luckily not everywhere.

It is so nice not living near a pub anymore.

I'm pleased I A) don't live near other humans that behave like this & B) enjoy sports like tennis that seldom involve braying in the streets.

They do if you work in the civil service like myself.

I’m a small business owner and a member of staff actually asked me, when there was an extra bank holiday for the Queen’s birthday (or whatever the last one was), “do you get given money from the government to cover it?” 🤣🤦‍♂️

Spoken like a true football hater

It's a lot less stressful watching it once you know the result :)

OonaStubbs · 04/07/2026 13:17

Everyone I know will be watching the match. I find it hard to believe that anyone would purposely miss what could be history in the making.

🤣 this is the comment that simultaneously made me laugh, and cry. I think this must have been a click bait post.

OonaStubbs · 07/07/2026 09:48

Well a few people at work didn't actually watch it live - some because it ended up being delayed by an hour. But they at least watched the highlights. And nearly everyone I know stopped up to watch it. And why not? It was a once in a lifetime event.

OP posts:
Purplebunnie · 07/07/2026 10:00

Once in a lifetime event? There is a World Cup every 4 years and it wasn't even the final. I think you are over egging this a bit

It’s a mid tournament match - it’s not ‘once in a lifetime’.

I have asked around my colleagues and it seems two watched it live or highlights - that’s a very small percentage of the people I work with.

The others saw the result on the news or whatever. I don’t know anyone who thinks it’s ’once in a lifetime’. What makes it that? Is there some particular significance to that match?

igelkott2026 · 07/07/2026 11:09

Of course it's not once in a lifetime. If they make it to the final it might be, given the last time was 60 years ago. And that's on at a more useful time for European viewers.

Just coming back to this comment, my DH and DS watched it on catch-up knowing the result. They said even then it was quite stressful.

MyOliveStork · 07/07/2026 11:10

Maybe if we got to the final and WON then I would think a Bank Holiday would be fitting, but otherwise no. It’s just a game of football.

outdooryone · 07/07/2026 13:31

"once in a lifetime"
Repeated every 4 years.
With 10-14 matches or so to get to final for each team.
