AIBU can't sleep and feel like I'm going mad

I feel like I will go mad. I'm desperately trying to get to sleep but I feel like I am sleeping under a jet engine. Upstairs neighbours I assume have some sort of mobile AC unit on. It's a non stop engine sound above my head. I have a series of really critical meetings tomorrow. I feel like my brain is on fire. Can't sleep in the living room as my settee has got cat wee smell activated by the heat (I'll save that for another thread). I've listened to 2 hours of podcasts and have had the pillow over my head for the last 30 minutes. Help.

Ear plugs don’t help with certain sounds and unfortunately not low, bassy rumblings or vibrations. Ask them if they can move it, OP?

CoffeeAndCats3 · 06/07/2026 09:47

Active noise cancelling ear buds are your friend.

I use my Apple AirPods. They stick out a bit, but work for me as I sleep on my back. You couldn't side sleep with them in.

Hollabread · 06/07/2026 14:38

Plucking up the courage to speak to the neighbours as I cannot bear another night of it. I kept the music and fan on all night and still didn't block out the vibrating and humming. I had about 3 hours sleep and not because I stayed up for the football!

I would put music on in your bedroom and sleep downstairs. Then tell the neighbours tomorrow why you had to do that and try to reach some compromise . Nightmare.
For the cat pee, Extreme spray genuinely removes the smell from soft furnishings, it's amazing.

I do sleep downstairs! It's a ground floor maisonette and the neighbours bedroom is right above mine. 😵‍💫

Thanks, I have tried the Extreme spray but ended up throwing the cushion away now and the smell thankfully has not reappeared!

Posting on here as the neigbours are yet again running their AC unit tonight. I cannot have a minute's rest. I didn't see them all day and busy with DC afterschool and this evening. Finally able to rest and my bedroom room is buzzing and vibrating.

No one else to moan to. Hoping for a hand hold. Should I just knock on their door in the morning.

Yes you should - then they can either try to help eg mats like suggested or they won’t - but you won’t be any worse off and it might get better

Yes, knock on the door. They likely don't realise and you can't be suffering in silence.

I find going outside in this heat helps. You cool down a bit and it's nice to look at the stars.

ValueofNothing · 07/07/2026 00:35

Speak to the neighbours. I've had to do it before regarding noise and it's shit but it did improve things. You'll feel better once you've had a word.

If you absolutely can't catch them, leave a note but make it clear you would have preferred to speak to them in person. But much better is talking face to face.

If I had an aircon unit and discovered it was that disruptive to my neighbours, I would use it earlier in the day and turn it off at night. Most people are decent people who don't want to upset others.

Yes. At the very least ask them to move it. It’s really unfair on you.

Promethazine. 40-50mg, available OTC. Lifechanger.

Checking in. Another night with the AC unit going. I haven't had the chance to catch the neighbours and each morning I feel so petty!

My MH is taking a battering due to other issues. Feel like ripping my head off right now. I've been on the sofa for a few hours but come into the bedroom now.

Can anyone give me some tips on what to say to the neighbours. I will pluck up the courage to knock tomorrow.

Just say: hello neighbours! I appreciate that it’s been really hot, but your air con unit is directly above my head at night and what with the excessive heat, I’m finding it absolutely impossible to sleep because of the vibration. Is there any chance you could move it? Thank you so much,

For another night but magnesium really helps. Foam earplugs and sleep mask that plays white noise.

Yeah Magnesium helps me sleep, unfortunately it gives me vertigo🙇🏻‍♀️

EDIT: sorry, didn't realise it was an older thread!!

how about...

Your fucking Aircon is keeping me fucking awake and I'm ready to fucking kill you!!

But given you're already a bit nervous about knocking and feel petty maybe try.

Hi Neighbour I was just hoping you could please put some rubber matting under your air-conditioning unit because it's stopping me sleeping. It did in the last heat wave too but I was hoping I'd get used to it but I haven't and I need some sleep. So if you could put some rubber matting underneath it, it would be greatly appreciated.

I doubt they're going to want to move it because it'll probably be necessary to have it next to a window for ventilation and they will want it in their bedroom at night, but some rubber matting should sort it out

I'll try the milder of your suggestions. I do need to pluck up the courage, I'm going mad here with no sleep and my head hurts.
Still up and there are only so many youtube videos I can watch. Anyone else just feeling wired, hot and unable to sleep?

OP posts:
garlictwist · Yesterday 02:26

I can’t sleep either. It’s not even warm here in Yorkshire so can’t blame that. I’m just wide awake and getting annoyed.

ValueofNothing · Yesterday 13:25

The more you put this off, OP, the more you work up dread about speaking to them They're just people, the likelihood is they have no idea how loud the aircon unit is and would be horrified it's so loud it rumbles through your home and keeps you awake.

I had to speak to neighbours before about noise, and while I dreaded it, they were reasonable, I felt such relief after speaking to them, and things did improve.

They’re not going to move it or switch it off overnight. So speak to them about putting some protection under it.

If both of your windows are open, however, you’ll still get the noise coming through.

I suffer from insomnia anyway & haven't helped myself by watching too much late ight WC football. 🙄🙄

I learnt to sleep without any covers wen I iced in Valencia & I have a fan on high & oscillating & I focus on it going up & down my body, this sometimes helps me go to sleep, but mostly my brain just goes on overdrive and to some dark places when
I try to sleep.

Nowt that can't be picked up/delivered & doesn't need to be expensive. I'd happily buy it if I was the OP if they agree to use it.

putting towels under an appliance like that is a fire risk,
