AIBU can't sleep and feel like I'm going mad

I feel like I will go mad. I'm desperately trying to get to sleep but I feel like I am sleeping under a jet engine. Upstairs neighbours I assume have some sort of mobile AC unit on. It's a non stop engine sound above my head. I have a series of really critical meetings tomorrow. I feel like my brain is on fire. Can't sleep in the living room as my settee has got cat wee smell activated by the heat (I'll save that for another thread). I've listened to 2 hours of podcasts and have had the pillow over my head for the last 30 minutes. Help.

In the no sleep brigade too. My partner is in the spare room as it's so warm. I've slept for about two hours. Fan on. First day back at work tomorrow after a week off and dreading it. Tried really hard to have a good sleep routine but heat disrupted it.

BuffetTheDietSlayer · 22/06/2026 01:26

Do you have a bathtub or car you can sleep in?

macaroni234 · 22/06/2026 01:28

Earplugs?. 4-3-7 breathing or something like that. Have a google. Add up the letters in your name so D=4 E=5 B=2 etc?
You have my sympathy. It’s awful when you absolutely need sleep and can’t.

BCBird · 22/06/2026 01:39

I in the club too. I been booked to work this week, but there is no way I can go tomorrow. Back to the doctors for me and this recurring health issue. Sick of pain and uncertainty. Hope things improve for us all

Hankunamatata · 22/06/2026 01:52

For another night but magnesium really helps. Foam earplugs and sleep mask that plays white noise.

Seawolves · 22/06/2026 01:53

Can't sleep either, every time I start to nod off my little one's heart rate/O2 monitor goes off.

Have you tried boxed breathing?

Hollabread · 22/06/2026 01:53

I am on the sofa now. There's a smell of cat wee but it's better than the jet engine noise. I've had a midnight snack of crisps and orange juice. Considering putting the TV on so I'll fall asleep but now extra anxious that the neighbours will continue basking in their AC overnight every night this week.

@BuffetTheDietSlayer Yes I could sleep in the bathtub but likely to get stuck in it!

WIBU to ask the neighbours in the morning whether they were also kept awake by a loud electrical noise all night long?

I hope everyone can get some rest tonight, sorry for those suffering from illness and or worries. Like a truly sleepless night, the hours are flying by and getting closer to my alarm time😬

TV is going on now. Because of course I can now hear the noise from the living room!

Go on YouTube and type: Paul McKenna Sleep.
If the videos help you I highly recommend his app “Paul McKenna” from the App Store available as a monthly or annual subscription you get access to his whole catalogue

Mindtheagp · 22/06/2026 02:58

I’m so sorry. I hope you’re asleep now. I’m about to take a sleeping pill

SulkySeagull · 22/06/2026 02:58

Ear plugs, and some sleep music from YouTube or Spotify, and if needed take a night nurse or strong sleep aid. Might be a bit late for that now but just in case you need help for the rest of the week

ExitPursuedByABare · 22/06/2026 03:01

I didn’t sleep last night so nodded off yesterday afternoon so now I can’t sleep tonight. Grrrr

professionalcommentreader · 22/06/2026 03:31

Snap, just binge watched the last three episodes of Little Disasters. Luckily off work this week.

ThinkImGettingNarky · 22/06/2026 08:33

@Hollabread I couldn’t think past the cat wee in you post 🤢. You urgently need a new couch.

Did you get some sleep?

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 22/06/2026 08:43

I hope you got some sleep. When I can’t sleep, I tell myself it’s ok and just to rest instead. It’s hard! But accepting that there will be no sleep does allow my body to rest.

I also listen to podcasts. There are a few free ones that give you a guided meditation to get you to sleep that actually work. I hope you get through the day ok. The AC unit is likely to be on all week, so if I were you I’d get some AirPods and listen to anything to drown it out.

Hollabread · 06/07/2026 01:28

Returned to this thread as the upstairs neighbours are still at with their mobile AC unit. It is a very loud and persistent hum and vibration right above my head. I have kept my own fan on to dim the noise but it's more a vibration anyway. I'm turning up the music. God help me.

Thankfully I isolated the smell to one particular throw cushion which I had washed but the smell was ingrained. In the bin it went and haven't smelt the wee smell since 🙏

I am tempted to talk to the neighbours in the morning. This is a nightmare. Anyone please talk me out of this!

OP posts:
Darragon · 06/07/2026 01:41

That seems like a good idea. Maybe they could put some foam like a yoga mat under the AC?

If only they could think of that themselves!
Would it be so awful to have the conversation tomorrow? I honestly feel like I'm going mad! I'm playing music, got my fan on and can still hear and feel it.

that sounds rough - getting no sleep is awful,

Of course it’s fine to talk to the neighbours.
they are likely to be oblivious.

its probably the vibrations that make the most noise for you - you could ask them to put it on a rubber matt like pp has said to see id that makes
a difference?

I would put music on in your bedroom and sleep downstairs. Then tell the neighbours tomorrow why you had to do that and try to reach some compromise . Nightmare.
For the cat pee, Extreme spray genuinely removes the smell from soft furnishings, it's amazing.

Elsvieta · 06/07/2026 07:19

Wax earplugs (foam don't work) - try Quies.

Comtesse · 06/07/2026 07:20

Anti histamine before bed and some proper ear plugs may help?
