London Assembly calls for protection of trans people in wake of new EHRC guidance

The London Assembly has raised serious concerns about the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s revised Code of Practice, warning it is discriminatory, contradictory and unworkable.

Members highlighted the high levels of harassment faced by trans people and cautioned that the new guidance risks worsening discrimination and restricting access to everyday services.

The Assembly has called on London MPs to intervene and support Early Day Motion 240, while asking the GLA to set out how it would respond if the Code is adopted.

Benali Hamdache AM who proposed the motion, said:

“Trans rights organisations have raised serious concerns about the revised Equality and Human Rights Commission Code of Practice, and the Assembly shares the view that the guidance is unworkable and risks worsening an already difficult climate for trans people, who continue to face significant discrimination and disadvantage.

“It’s important there’s cross-party agreement on this, demonstrating the Assembly’s support for trans Londoners and commitment to inclusion.“

The full text of the motion is:

Please note!

The Motion was agreed by 6 votes for and 5 against.

So a more accurate press release would have been to say London Assembly divided on new EHRC guidelines.

Needing to be protected from the reality of their sex is ... er ... not exactly the purview of the London Assembly.

Added to the fact that there are 25 members of the Assembly, so less than half took part in the debate, and only a quarter voted for it.

What an extreme example of a press release completely misrepresenting a situation.

Well as they influence public spaces and amenities such as toilets I think you will find this is yet another group of politicians trying to say we shouldn't have to follow the law.

ie a group of politicians saying women's rights dont matter.

Is this gangs of terfs with cudgels, then? I must have missed the headlines.

SirChenjins · 04/07/2026 18:12

Protected from what, exactly? Those terrifying women that they want so desperately to share the single sex spaces that don't belong to them with? I'd have thought they would be running in the opposite direction on their man shaped legs from the meanie ladies.

I suppose it is no surprise to find the motion was proposed by one of the three Green Assembly Members.

So the motion was proposed by a party that is approximately an eighth of the total number of members, and passed by a quarter of the members.

Protection from what?

Wishesandhorses · 04/07/2026 18:44

Protect from what?

What about protecting women too?

With the obvious possibility that their members had been forewarned that this vote was to be taken and therefore it was essential all their members attended.

I spoke to an SNP member recently, who said most political meetings he attends consist of a tiny minority of members, who actually bother to turn up. This means they are wide open to entryism.

So the fact that many of us aren’t interested enough to turn up, combined with those who leave because the entryists make them uncomfortable is highly problematic.

Zack Polanski is a member of the London Assembly

Thingybob · 04/07/2026 19:25

All the Labour members present abstained

Well yes, but interesting that he didn't propose the motion. Maybe a bit worried about more publicity.

Which is a shame in one way, because if he had all the red tops would have had a field day.

So its worth noting that their "interest" in the issue isn't that deep!

What actually is this London Assembly and is anything they say/do legally binding or can we just ignore them? Are they the equivalent of Father Ted standing outside the cinema with a "Down with this sort of thing" sign? Or are they a serious group of people who actually have any ability to do anything?

Sorry dodgy phone doesn't allow me to link but I read it on Reddit and other social media today. There is a link on the Reddit thread that takes you to the recording of the meeting if you can stomach hearing how Trans and Intersex people have always lived amongst us and there has never been a problem.

TrainedByTheBiddyMafia · 04/07/2026 19:54

So it’s virtue signalling by the London assembly but ultimately won’t change anything especially as the Labour members abstained

SinnerBoy · 04/07/2026 19:54

How can it possibly be discriminatory? It advises, based on an Act of Parliament. Unless they mean the bit about not letting women challenge men in frocks, in female spaces? That certainly seems discriminatory and contrary to the law.

Apart, obviously, from all the problems.

No - if the meeting was quorate then the decision stands.

And as a press release has been distributed in the name of the Assembly then is it now Assembly policy.

Unexisting them, of course.

The only difference between a trans woman and a man is that the former has persuaded or coerced people to treat him as if they think he's a female person by letting do woman-only things.

So if people don't treat him like a female person by letting him doing woman-only things, any difference between him and any other man is purely theoretical.

They say they need to be allowed to do woman only things because they are women as well, but really it's the other way round - it is only the giving of woman-only access that proves to society that they are women.

I may be missing something but they don’t have the power to reject the guidance do they? All they can do is write to MPs and ask questions about how it’s implemented? Which is annoying but in itself doesn’t change anything does it? I may well have missed something significant I’m not London based
