Hello mumsnetters!

Not sure if you have heard my latest news. I have started a publishing company - Phoenix Publications Ltd - and brought my first book to the market. The book is written by myself and Pat Carlen. It is part memoir, part narrative sociology and provides an account of how on earth I ended up taking the Open University to court. It is told in a traditional memoir style but the narrative focuses on changing sexual politics, changing understandings of gender and gender identity , what academic freedom means, what it is like to work in universities.

We very much hope you will enjoy it. If you are interested in purchasing a copy, you can buy it directly from the Phoenix Publications website. The link is here:

We had fun designing the cover. Rather under-stated, don't you think?

Anyhow, as ever, pass the word.

Best
J

Hi Jo I saw this mentioned elsewhere and thought it was an essential addition to my growing collection. Thanks for the reminder, I shall go and buy. Good luck!

TwoLoonsAndASprout · 04/07/2026 13:05

Brilliant news, on both the book and the publishing company! Looking forward to reading - and seeing what else you bring out.

AnotherAngryAcademic · 04/07/2026 13:24

Oooooh. <Reconsiders abandoned book proposal.>

(ETA I have ordered the book, and hope I am early enough for a signed copy!)

Helleofabore · 04/07/2026 13:35

Thanks Jo and congratulations on the book.

ItsCoolForCats · 04/07/2026 14:43

BridgetPhillipsonIsACowardlyJobsworth · 04/07/2026 15:50

Congratulations on the book, Jo! Very glad there is a new publisher who will be getting those important books out there! I hope it does really well.

That all looks fantastic and I'm sure you're going to be very successful. Are you looking for other new publications for a similar audience?

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 04/07/2026 16:10

Thanks for the heads up, it's not currently available in Waterstones, because it's not published until the 9/7, but I've got it on my wish list ready.

Best of luck with you're new venture, I'm sure they'll be plenty of authors who will welcome a non-captured publisher who will bring some sanity back into the industry. 💐👏😁

NotAtMyAge · 04/07/2026 17:46

Congratulations, Jo. Ordered!

Can I suggest that it might help to spread the word if you ask MNHQ to add your name to the thread title, showing that this is your book. I think it would catch more people's attention that way.

Peregrina · 04/07/2026 18:57

Oh it looks as though I have just missed out on a signed copy. I am order no. 107.

PersonIrresponsible · 04/07/2026 19:59

Congratulations!!

Can you let us know when you've uploaded it to Kindle.

Mucho appreciated

JoPhoenix · 04/07/2026 21:18

Did you already check out with Amazon? Its way better to go direct to me via Phoenix Publications. You will get it faster and it will be hand posted by me. Cheers!

I'm sorry I would but I have major difficulties in getting things posted to me, I need to be able to pick it up or have it delivered to a locker.

Don't use the Royal Mail/Parcel Force or whatever it is they call themselves when you send things out there absolute shite and they only have one job to do.

I put it in my Amazon basket but I’ll order from you

Davros · 05/07/2026 09:13

I’ve ordered from you but I found the process on your website a bit confusing. I added it to the basket and then could not find a link to the basket. It was a tiny little icon top left of the page, it didn’t appear in the drop down menu. It could be improved imo

I had the web designer change the basket so that people know it is a basket. Hope it makes it easier.

I’m sure it will be an improvement

Peregrina · Yesterday 19:12

I too was lucky enough to get a signed copy.

It's particularly pertinent to me because I am a graduate of both Essex and Open Universities, and I expect them to do better!
