MMU Survey on Road Safety for those who identify as women

Manchester University are conducting a survey on Women's Road Safety in Greater Manchester

Qualtrics Survey | Qualtrics Experience Management https://share.google/uaYXnCKGFITeMRcGj

It's for anyone who 'identifies'. I got kicked out on the first or second question because I had to honestly answer 'no' to the question 'do I identify as a woman'. I sent a brief email to the woman (or bloke with a female name) explaining the problem so I've name changed jic.

For the purposes of road safety, I have always identified as a red squirrel, thanks to my Tufty Club membership in the late sixties. I think Tufty was male, and I was pretty keen on being a boy in those days, so I guess I was a male squirrel and therefore ineligible to take the survey.

Igmum · 19/06/2026 14:37

I was in the Tufty Club too! Loved it 😀

And WTF Manchester University and MMU (Manchester Metropolitan University) are two separate institutions. MMU is the old Manchester Poly. This particular bit of idiocy is Manchester University. Is the idea that ladyfeelz prevent us looking left and right when crossing the road or navigating safely when driving? Are we too busy tilting our heads?

IrnBruAndDietCoke · 19/06/2026 14:39

The only answer to any road safety problem is to join the Tufty club. They should bring it back. That is all.

IMPORTANT

For the purposes of this thread only

The second 'M' in MMU stands for 'Misogynistic', not to be confused with Manchester Metropolitan University. Apologies for any confusion.

If you're able to say the phrase "I am a woman" and mean it then you identify as a woman. That is literally all it means. What an absolutely silly waste of your time to make such a fuss about it. I'm sure they'll file your objection straight in the bin and crack on with the respondees who didn't have a meltdown at the first simple question.

LeftBoobGoneRogue · 20/06/2026 00:07

You either are a woman or you’re not.
None of this identity nonsense.
I don’t identify as anything in any way.

FemaleAndLearning · 20/06/2026 00:22

I don't identify as a woman.

I am a woman.

Don't be ridiculous - identifying as something doesn't make you that something. You know this really.

Why did you start filling out a survey you knew didn't apply to you, then?

I wish I had that much spare time.

You could do - if you didn't spend it on MN asking people why they filled out a survey when it doesn't affect you at all.

MagpiePi · 20/06/2026 07:46

What is the purpose of the research?
The research project seeks to explore the inequalities and unique barriers faced by women road users (in vehicles, as drivers and passengers, as pedestrians, on two wheels) and the challenges they face, in order to identify ways to improve safety and confidence for women road users and help reduce women killed and seriously injured on the road. The research project will inform policy to improve safety, confidence and perception of safety on the roads as well as breaking down gender stereotypes and improving road safety. The project will also help to identify effective interventions to reduce road danger for women road users…

This is written in a clear way and only refers to women, no ‘identifying as’ terminology, so it is utterly baffling why they would then ask for participation from anyone who identifies as a woman.

Pistacheeo · 20/06/2026 07:51

I'm fed up with consultations that don't ask for biological sex. I'm forever clicking "other" in the wanky 'gender' category and letting them know my sex is female.

I don't identify as anything.

MyDogClive · 20/06/2026 07:53

Tufty says when making a survey, first find a way to shoehorn your gender agenda in.

Yes, I've just done a survey for people who have thyroid conditions (I'm hypothyroid) At the end, it asked which sex you were assigned at birth and what gender you identified with. I clicked "other" which brought up a box to fill in, where I told them that sex is OBSERVED at birth and not assigned, and that I didn't have a gender or "identify" as female, I AM female. Fools!

misscockerspaniel · 20/06/2026 10:18

Road safety for those who "identify" as women, you say? TBF high heels can be treacherous, especially in the rain.

It's literally the 2nd question. If you answer 'no' you get kicked out.

I don't understand why the medics collect data presumably so they can see how a condition or the way it was treated affects different people differently. One of the major differences between people is their sex. By having a question that totally blurs that difference must majorly undermind some of the things they could use this information to learn.

I also wrote to her. The 2nd question is now changed to asking are you a biological woman or do you 'identify' as one. And apparently there's a later question (if you pass Q2) asking whether you're a 'cis-woman' or a 'trans-woman' (essentially the same as Q2). I've replied pointing out the problems, including the physical differences between men and women, as well as the exclusion of trans-men (biological women). It's a hot mess!

Edited

I emailed her and got the same response. I also replied pointing out that transwomen will never experience life as a woman however much they want to believe they do.
She did say that the later question about whether you are a 'cis' woman (offensive!) or a transwoman would enable them to separate the two sets of experiences but they may as well conduct a survey that includes women and men who believe in god, or women and men who support Man Utd because they have as much in common as women and men who identify as women.

Not true at all.

I AM a woman.

The phrase “identify as” literally means, “I claim to be, even though I’m not”.

No self-respecting woman would ever use it.

ToastSafeFromMothsAndDogs · 23/06/2026 09:42

Did you have to pass a ‘just checking you’re a human and not a robot’ test first? Funny how those don’t just ask you whether you identify as a human.

Soontobe60 · 23/06/2026 10:12

I’ve just completed this and sent a very lengthy email to them.

*I have just completed the survey on women’s safety and experiences whilst travelling in greater Manchester. I was very interested to see that this survey isn’t actually about women’s safety as it enables men who identify as women to partake, and excludes women who identify as men, so in reality it could be all men and some women.
How will you ensure that the voices of women - remembering that the Supreme Court defines women as those born female - are not mixed in with the voices of men who identify as women? Surely that particular group of men would be better to receive a survey specifically designed for them? After all, I would suggest that men who identify as women may well be subjected to a different type of unsafe travel (eg transphobia) than women do.
The use of the contentious term ‘cis’ to describe women is frankly outdated and insulting. We will understand and know the term woman means just that. It doesn’t mean men. Men who identify as women are a subset of men.
You should be honest right from the start and ensure anyone looking at this survey understands that it’s targeting women and a type of man. The answers you receive are not likely to be a true reflection of the experiences of women and therefore the survey is pointless.

I would be grateful if you could answer the following:
How will you ensure that only the responses from women (the female variety) are included?
Have you considered a seperate survey for men who identify as women? If not, why?
When deciding who to include in the survey demographics, why did you decide to include men who identify as women?
In what other areas of your research is Gender Ideology at the forefront of any decisions made regarding sex based lives?*

I wonder if they’ll bother to reply?

StellaAndCrow · 23/06/2026 10:46

There are design issues in vehicles related to biological sex - height, arm reach, body proportions etc. Women viewing mirrors from different angles, different view of road, different risks in crashes.
These are sex-based and not identity-based.

Yes, it would be quite legitimate to ask what issues men who identifies as women have regarding road safety.
Lumping them in with women does transwomen a disservice. It's trans erasure!
