The Wolf House cafe was closed for a while but I think it’s now open again under new owners. It’s a great location for a mid-walk tea and a wee, though we’ve not taken a route past it for a while. One of the lovely things about the Silverdale/Arnside area is that there are lots of intermeshing paths so you can put together quite a variety of different walks within the area. It’s got:
Woods
meadows
limestone pavements
large reed beds
clifftops
estuary with salt marshes and mudflats
hill with fantastic views
villages
’mosses’ - areas which are seasonally flooded

So theres a big variety of flora (inc rare orchids) and fauna (lots of bird species, rare butterflies).

And most people zoom by it unawares on the M6!

Sounds lovely! I haven't been up that way in probably over thirty years, and then we headed straight for the Lake District. It's a long way to drive, but I see there is a train station at Carnforth... hmm, might be looking to go somewhere in September, after school holidays are over.

There are stations at Carnforth, Silverdale and Arnside, before the line swings over the bridge towards Grange over Sands and onwards tto the south and then west coast of the Lake District. The Silverdale station is just round the corner from Leighton Moss RSPB and I think if you arrive by train (or bike) you get free or reduced entry.
We keep meaning to take the train from Preston or Lancaster along that route just as a scenic trip.

I shall look into it, I think! I see I can get a train from Cardiff Central to Carnforth in just over 5 hours, with only one change at Manchester Piccadilly. But I'll have to add on time to get to the city, and time it just right, as well. Could be done. My other idea was east, way east, around East Anglia/ Norfolk way, another place I've yet to visit. Was supposed to be meeting up with my sister and possibly one niece in London, but I think that will have to be rescheduled now, so am at a bit of a loose end for September.

(I should stay home and do some work the house...but if I'm moving house...?)

Whispers - at least the gerbils haven’t noticed that Wimbledon is on. The thought of a football/tennis mash up is terrifying. And I don’t think the elephant shrews could manage the climb into the umpire’s chair.

MarieDeGournay · 29/06/2026 17:44

It's time for a new thread, and I've thought of a title so I'll do it - usually I can't think of anything and get performance anxiety and then feel relieved, but a bit guilty, when somebody else starts the new thread🙄

So gerbils, capys, etc., all paws on deck to pack up for the move!

I'll remember to post the new location on here before we lock up. This time😒

Are there any Stockingers who need to be alerted individually? @Swashbuckled @WearyAuldWumman @AsWithGlad @Chersfrozenface @Waitwhat23
These are a few I can think of - please add others.

I've never done the @ thing before, and I see it only comes up with the usernames who have posted on this thread, so what about people who haven't? I'm thinking of Boily, for instance, who HAS to be informed otherwise someone else might find her secret stash of Tunnocks before she has a chance to move them😁

EmpressaurusKitty · 29/06/2026 17:44

It wouldn’t be easy playing tennis with a football.

Sometimes players say that on an unusually good day they are 'seeing the ball like a football'.
They obvs haven't thought it through, have they. Kitty?😄

EmpressaurusKitty · 29/06/2026 17:48

If the gerbils do decide to do this, I think the sensible capybaras should be in charge of health, safety & logistics.

Excellent! Post the link here! I couldn’t think of anything.

In other news, the harvest has begun - saw my first combine this afternoon, though it had only done about 50 yards and a posse of men was standing around behind it in the straw looking serious - so either it was malfunctioning, or they were just rechecking the moisture content of the grain.

I will go with my Father a-reaping
To the Brown Field by the sea,
And the geese and pigeons and sparrows
Will come flocking after me.
I will sing to the weary reapers
With the wren in the heat of the sun,
And my Father will sing the Scythe-Song
That joys for the harvest done.
Smile

AngleofRepose · 29/06/2026 17:58

Only 15 posts left (14 after me,). Who can we get to help move things this time? All the gerbils, capybaras, et al., are busy with the World Cup, and I think Carmela said all the camels were on holiday in June, to avoid Pride Month festivities. Possibly Egypt or Ethiopia. Or was it Ecuador?

@ChristmasStars @Thehorticulturalhussie we're on the move again.

I can pack up the random flags lying around, but my goodness the Gerbil World Cup paraphernalia has just exploded since we got here! I'll take the sewing box.

ps. I'm not carrying the flip chart/whiteboard stands again! Can't we get the movers in?

Magpiecomplex · 29/06/2026 18:02

It's about time the flying squirrels in the library started earning their keep, if you ask me.

It’s fine. The next match isn’t until tomorrow so the gerbils can pack. We just need some support in ensuring they don’t leave anything behind…

ErrolTheDragon · 29/06/2026 18:08

I’ve just realised I’ve not seen android around for a while, didn’t she just transport everyone once à la Star Trek?

Don’t worry, a new one has been installed in the new place.

Clever, Myrtle😁

AngleofRepose · 29/06/2026 18:23

Capybaras are three steps ahead of me! They've hired a large van and some very strong helpers to move stuff (think they're Gorillas!)

Chersfrozenface · 29/06/2026 18:25

You rang?

Also, Carnforth station as in 'Brief Encounter'.

Marie, you posted that poem a few threads ago, and I liked it so much that I C&P'ed it to my laptop.

I've pinched some machinery to help with the move...

< wheezes> Thanks for the alarm call Angle. I was so engrossed in the tribunal thread I nearly missed the bus

MyrtleLion · 29/06/2026 18:27

I’ll lock up then.
