I am a teacher and have heard lots of parents won’t be sending their children in during the heat wave next week.

Are you keeping yours off?

I am dreading it as a teacher; our classroom is so stuffy!

Er, yes? They'll also be hot at home and I have to work.

mynameiscalypso · 20/06/2026 20:38

Of course. I still need to go to work.

Goodmorningeveryone26 · 20/06/2026 20:39

Of course I’m sending my children to school. Am surprised people would keep their children off unless their classroom would be dangerously (not just unpleasantly) hot

Wishitsnows · 20/06/2026 20:41

Of course! I can’t imagine why anyone would consider keeping them home.

DaisyChain505 · 20/06/2026 20:42

Can’t see why it would be an issue. Surely the schools won’t be sending them outside to run around in the heat and classrooms will have blinds down, fans on etc to keep them cool.

billandtedsexcellentadventure · 20/06/2026 20:43

@DaisyChain505soo many schools don’t have blinds nor fans!

sanityisamyth · 20/06/2026 20:43

Yes! Why wouldn’t I?!

dadtoateen · 20/06/2026 20:44

Why wouldn’t you send your child in? It’s not a heatwave, it’s summer!!

how did we cope with warm weather in the 80’s and 90’s etc without social media telling us it gonna be lovely and warm….

Sunflower7890 · 20/06/2026 20:44

Yes, we are lucky the school is new and has air conditioning so will be better than at home anyway

Sirzy · 20/06/2026 20:45

I work in a school and we are fully expecting everyone in! As we have during previous heatwaves.

our classroom is quite warm but we will leave blinds down and leave the door to outside open if there is any breeze. When we are outside we will limit the time and encourage staying in the shade.

make sure they are covered in sun cream and have a hat and water bottle and they will be fine

ChefsKisser · 20/06/2026 20:45

Of course they’re going to school. Rather hot at school than at home!

We are set to break the heat wave of 76 record this week in the Midlands its not "just summer" my son has a hour long taxi ride each way im concerned about the return home as any parent would be

MinnieMountain · 20/06/2026 20:47

Of course. DS's secondary school has said they don't have to wear jumpers or ties, shorts are allowed anyway. They won't melt.

Blightfitting · 20/06/2026 20:47

More concerned about the school closing cos of the heat, to be honest. But that would be as unreasonable as me keeping the kids off.
It's hot. It's not dangerously or record-breakingly hot. Kids will be fine so long as they're sensible. I wouldn't even think about keeping them off (and presumably in a house which is just as hot).

Nickyknackered · 20/06/2026 20:47

OP is a teacher, she is hoping to have less kids next week.

scalt · 20/06/2026 20:48

Only on Mumsnet would anyone even consider not sending children in.

Everything is so polarised; it’s either unprecedented extreme heat, or the beast from the east. Nothing in between.

We have to stop being so precious about things like this. and remember, don’t moan about the heat; do so kills the sun fairies.

TheChosenTwo · 20/06/2026 20:48

What?! Maybe I’m just very out of the loop (my youngest is at senior school and I don’t have any parent friends there so have no idea what anyone else is doing) but ds will be going to school unless I hear that it’s closed.

JustAnotherWhinger · 20/06/2026 20:49

Both DS’s will be going, and DN to nursery, as they go very local (one walks to the end of our garden and the other gets a bus at the end of the street for a 15 min drive).

DD4 I’ll be discussing with the her school and taking their (absolutely unofficial and off the record) advice. She goes to a SEN school, it’s an old building that gets incredibly hot even in regular temperatures plus it’s a 55 minute journey each way in her taxi. Her health issues are worse in heat and she struggles. She may well be at home but will see how it goes.

AbsoluteHoot · 20/06/2026 20:49

How daft. People freaking out over some hot weather. What is this teaching kids?

The taxi which more than likely will have air con?

What are you concerned about? Assuming you are a great parent you will supply plenty of water for said child etc….

world has gone soft.

I think cars with air con may well be the best place to be!

Assume you mean the hottest day in June record? That could be relevant as the other hottest days have been in school hols.

edited to say that they were at the end of July so may have still been in term time.

Does the taxi have air-con?

Growlybear83 · 20/06/2026 20:51

Whyever woukd you keep your children off school just because we’re in the middle of a heatwave? Children still go to school in countries with temperatures very much hotter than expected here next week.

Trip0987 · 20/06/2026 20:52

IT'S SHITE BEING SCOTTISH

(OK, it's not, but i love a good Trainspotting quote and I'm jealous of all the sunshine!)
