What useful items do you always take on a UK holiday?

We’ve not done a uk trip for over 10 years so I’ve completely forgotten what items to take from home that’ll make life easier/prevent me buying while there. We’re 2 adults and 16&18 yr old. So far I’m thinking of a couple of oven trays, wok, a decent frying pan, wooden spoon and spatula - main reason being for the size and the nonstick!

Does anyone have any items that they always take, or wish they’d taken?

Extension cable as there’s never enough plug sockets.
Decent sharp knife.

Melom · 03/07/2026 07:04

I have never taken an oven tray on holiday. Also never taken secateurs, doorstop, or colander.

It doesn’t sound much of a holiday. How much cooking are you going to do? We have burgers, pizza, a meze, jacket potatoes and salads. I used to take a sharp knife and extra t-towels. I do take some plastic boxes eg from Chinese take away and some foil trays so I can use them in the oven if needed and throw away.

I sometimes chuck a pack of loo roll in the car. Apart from that, not planning to cook much!

2Rebecca · 03/07/2026 07:12

We cook and sharp knife and pepper grinder come.

2Rebecca · 03/07/2026 07:13

I sometimes take an extension cable

MyOliveStork · 03/07/2026 07:20

Depends where you are staying. If it’s a caravan or lodge, bedside lamps, a parasol, sharp knife, sieve, my own pillow, bin bags, tea towels and oven mitt, cleaning bits for everyday use, bath/shower rug, cushions as never any on the sofas!

hereforthelolz · 03/07/2026 07:22

I’m with you on the oven trays! We cook dinners when we’re away and there’s normally only ever one tray, if at all!

NotMeNoNo · 03/07/2026 07:23

Sharp knife wrapped up in a tea towel. Sometimes a non stick frying pan. 2 of our own mugs and our Aeropress. A few sandwich bags as we normally do walking/hiking where you need to take lunch. That's for self catering.
Also an extension lead and a hdmi lead so we can watch a movie off a laptop if we fancy it, although most places have Netflix now.

Londonnight · 03/07/2026 07:56

My pillow!

didgeridid · 03/07/2026 08:03

We UK holiday a lot. I've never taken cooking equipment 🤣

But -
Loo roll
Tea towel
Dish cloth
Washing up liquid
A normal size mug or you are stuck with the crap IKEA mugs
Mini first aid kit with paracetamol, ibuprofen and a thermometer ( we still have young kids)
We do a food shop at the local super market when there

ETA - I save up sachets of salt, pepper, sauces throughout the year and take them too

whoateallthecookies · 03/07/2026 08:19

pegs - useful for all sorts of things, including keeping open packets shut
plastic storage boxes (for food in the fridge)
nightlight
couple of extra towels - for the beach, as hand towels etc.

MrsDroughtFire · 03/07/2026 08:26

Like pp I also save up sachets of sauces - you do have to watch out as ketchup shelf life often isn’t long.

We take

  • Ice cube tray for the freezer
  • water filter jug
  • elderflower cordial as you can’t always buy it
  • two tea towels
  • extra loo roll
  • bin bag
  • a stack of microfiber cloths
  • bottle of Method surface spray,
  • washing up liquid
  • two extra strong suction-pad hooks and a line of cord for a makeshift washing line in case it’s not feasible to dry swimwear outside
  • tea bags and coffee so I don’t have to buy huge packs when we are there
  • Small bottle of olive oil and balsamic vinegar as dh and I live on salads and baguettes whilst on vacation. We tend not to cook other than hard boiled eggs or pasta
  • usb-chargeable fly killer lamp thingy
  • portable fans (if the place isn’t aircon and it’s summer)

We do also have a George Foreman electric grill and a panini maker - sometimes we take those and have little bbqs (goes well with the salad!) or panini a lin which case we also take a scrubby thing to keep it clean.

Highonmyownsupply · 03/07/2026 08:30

My own hairdryer.

Highonmyownsupply · 03/07/2026 08:32

A couple of boxes of tissues.

Minoucheistheboss · 03/07/2026 09:03

where do you go on holiday if you have take that much with you? It’d be easier to stay at home.

MinnieCauldwell · 03/07/2026 09:25

We self catering in the UK quite a lot. Most places give us a list of what is included. If not just ask them, there is no way I Would cart kitchen equipment on holiday.
A couple of flasks are essential as we prefer to drink our own coffee when out and about.

TheHungryHungryLandsharks · 03/07/2026 09:30

Extension cords. Coffee machine (the ones on holiday lets are typically not cleaned which is why so they often stink and produce funky coffee).

Fans. Also take frying pans - the cottages we stay at tend to have lots of sauce pans but no decent size frying pans (I.e for steak).

Also get a food shop to arrive between 5-6pm (so once I’ve been there an hour). Also get the dog food for ‘pick up’ from the local post office.

Passthecake30 · 03/07/2026 12:53

Thanks everyone. To the pp - I’m not planning on cooking much but definitely breakfast, maybe 1-2 dinners, 1-2 lunches (5 days). Breakfast would be in the frying pan/wok, dinner would be in the wok/baking tray. Nothing fancy but we are a hungry bunch so just wanted to get it covered.

Couple of knives, pegs, food bags, Chinese Tupperware are an excellent shout!

Do you hire a van?

Giggorata · 03/07/2026 13:05

Extension lead with usb
rechargeable lamp
sharp knife
sticky tape
small radio/ipad and charger
kindle

hellospring26 · 03/07/2026 13:31

Decent chopping board, I cannot stand the glass ones you mostly seem to get.

LindorDoubleChoc · 03/07/2026 13:33

Marigold gloves

B0D · 03/07/2026 13:59

I would take my Moka coffee pot and coffee, and extra tea towels

chubley · 05/07/2026 16:43

1 kitchen roll, a few washing tabs and dishwasher tablets to avoid buying large packs, sandwich bags and food clips, the tea we like, decaf coffee, sachets of sugar for the porridge, a couple of hand towels for the bathrooms as I use the small towel for hair and face, tissues.
We buy a 4 pack of loo rolls, milk, food and alcohol locally.
