Finally someone has the guts to say what we've all been thinking for years.

NotAnotherScarf · 26/06/2026 22:39

I hadn't noticed that it wasn't I'm always sitting in my lounge. We're sitting in the beer garden. I was sat in a beer garden. I will sit in the garden....I'm sitting down a minute I'm knackered..

HappiestSleeping · 26/06/2026 22:45

This post should be sitting in Pedants' Corner

Carnationsareforever · 26/06/2026 22:46

???? Totally not getting the point of this thread

OverOrUnderprotective · 26/06/2026 22:47

Do you mean as opposed to sat? As in "I'm sat in my lounge?"

Youdontseehow · 26/06/2026 22:50

Yes. And if you’re outside, it’s not the floor. It’s the ground.

Loulou4022 · 26/06/2026 22:51

Yes. And if you’re outside, it’s not the floor. It’s the ground.

This in spades. Have noticed this recently where people refer to the ground outside as the floor. Why just why. I don't understand it at all.

DangerousMind · 27/06/2026 02:33

I often read sentences like this: ‘I was stood right there …’ No. You were STANDING right there.

DangerousMind · 27/06/2026 02:42

I was most confused when I first came across this usage, as it was accompanied by an image of a person clearly sitting on one of street - not a floor. I think it is an English idiosyncrasy.

Yes. And if you’re outside, it’s not the floor. It’s the ground.

Similarly it's a ceiling indoors and a roof outdoors.

My mother used to drive me mad saying she ws going to get a decorater to paint the roof.

I would be maddened by your spelling of decorator . . . .

Sorry! I am sure this heatwave is affecting us all in strange ways!

You were sitting in a beer garden.

To be fair, they may have been sat there by wait staff…
But if they took themselves to the table then yes, they were sitting there.

Yes, fair point (although "seated" possibly better in that context?).

Nah “I was sitting” is just more formal than “I was sat”. The latter is common in spoken English and I don’t think it is considered incorrect.

I would also say there can be a slight difference in meaning “-ing” emphasises that the action continued for a time whereas “I was sat” doesn’t and emphasises the position more, as in “I was seated”.

No I was sat in the beer garden. I am sitting and i will sit...I'm getting numb from all this sitting around mind

RaraRachael · 27/06/2026 09:42

@Bookishbobby
Blame autocorrect. I posted very early without my glasses on and didn't expect it to "correct" my spelling.

Yes, I only ever see this on here. I don’t get the confusion — it’s like confusing ‘ceiling’ with ‘sky’.

HelpMeGetThrough · 27/06/2026 10:05

Wait list
Park space

ING!!! ing, ing, fucking ING!!!!

Sorry, I’m not sure what came over me then.

I heard it on the TV. Someone calling the ground the floor. Can't recall the TV presenter.

You were only sat in the beer garden if someone picked you up and put you down on a chair in there.
The past participle of the verb to sit is sitting the present participle is also sitting, so it is correct to say "I am sitting", "I was sitting". You could say "I sat in the beer garden", if you prefer.

Yes it is considered incorrect, and it is incorrect. People may not think so and may use it but it is incorrect nevertheless. I don't think an educated person would say it.

No, "I was sat" is incorrect and is the entire point of the thread.
