I just heard a senior primary school head on the radio news talking about falling primary school applications. He was saying they have less and less kids each year!

Edit: I've made a mistake myself in the heading I just realised! Not woken up properly yet.

Pride (and pedantry) comes before... etc.

Yes, I heard that too. I must admit I did an aural double take.

Well this is awkward.

But at least you noticed!

I think most parents have received at least one woefully written letter from a headteacher in recent years. Don’t even get me started on school reports.

Our headteacher asked a couple of the dinosaurs on our staff to check her spelling and grammar before she sent out newsletters.

I'll have you know that all of my pupils' school reports are impeccably written!

My uncle was a teacher in a very posh private school and one of his pet peeves was this woman who was Head of Pastoral or some such job title. He used to say she had 'a thoroughly combative relationship with the written English language'! 🤣

DysmalRadius · 19/06/2026 22:21

Why do we make the distinction between less and fewer, but we never insist that people say 'greater' - we're happy for more to mean countable and uncountable and nobody cares. 🤷🏻

I have been known (in the dim and distant past) to mark letters from school in red pen and send them back to be corrected. 😁

Good for you.

I wanted to complain about a colleague's poor spelling but was told it was unprofessional.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 20/06/2026 22:48

I received a reprimand from the CEO for pointing out spelling and punctuation errors of a colleague. Apparently I was unkind.

What would have happened in the 1970s if this was a secretary transcribing shorthand dictation? It wouldn't be allowed to go out like that. So why is it suddenly "unkind" to allow rubbish grammar and spelling to go unchecked? And please not the "language evolves" crap.

Totally agree

RaraRachael · 02/07/2026 16:28

@FelicityShagsWell I totally agree about the "language evolves" nonsense.
It's just an excuse for bad spelling and grammar.
