Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some advice as I'm feeling quite confused about what's going on with my cycle. We have been trying to conceive since Nov 25. For reference I am 37 years old.

A bit of background:

  • I have one daughter.
  • I've had three miscarriages, all of which required surgery (the most recent miscarriage required surgery three separate times because the pregnancy tissue wasn't completely removed). 2 miscarriages prior to our daughter and one this year in Feb.
  • During my daughter's birth, she was 13 days overdue and I needed to be induced. After delivery, my placenta also failed to come away naturally and had to be removed surgically.
  • Because of my recurrent miscarriages, I'm currently under the care of the recurrent miscarriage clinic. I've had blood tests looking for thyroid problems, clotting disorders and autoimmune causes, all of which have come back normal. I'm currently waiting for a 3D pelvic scan through gynaecology because of my history.

Current cycle:

  • My last periods started on 18 April and 14 May.
  • Since then, I haven't had another period.
  • I've had numerous negative pregnancy tests
  • I had several days of very light pink/brown spotting and mild cramping from 25th - 30th June, I just had some more light brown spotting this morning.
  • I also had one episode of pain during sex that felt like it was around my cervix, followed by a little more pink spotting afterwards. The pain hasn't returned. 29th June.
  • I had clear stretchy cervical mucus on 23rd June, so started using ovulation tests. Although none became fully positive, they appeared to get darker before fading again, which makes me wonder whether I ovulated much later than expected.
  • I have had mild cramps on and off lining up with the spotting.

I have called Gynaecology twice regarding this and both times have told me to wait a bit longer. I'm starting to lose patience, and to be honest, its getting me down.

I'm wondering whether anyone has experienced anything similar, particularly with such a delayed cycle after previous miscarriages, or whether anyone with a history of retained pregnancy tissue, retained placenta or other uterine issues has had problems with delayed ovulation or absent periods.

I'm waiting for my pelvic scan, but in the meantime I'm feeling quite anxious and would really appreciate hearing if anyone has had a similar experience.

Hey,

Sorry for your losses. I also have one daughter and have had a few miscarriages over the last 2 1/2 years that we’ve been trying for another. I’m 36.

I haven’t really had anything like this. Each time I’ve miscarried it’s been a very faint test that has only shown up after missed period, sometimes a few days after.

Is it possible that you ovulated later?

Thank you for replying 💗

Yes I'm struggling to find anyone whos had anything similar to be honest.

I stupidly wasn't testing ovulation before missed period. Bit more spotting today so hoping its my period starting but not feeling confident!

Sorry you have been through the whole miscarriage saga as well, it can be brutal.

Firstly, I'm so sorry you've been through so much. Three miscarriages, multiple surgeries, and a retained placenta is a lot to carry, so it's completely understandable that this uncertainty is making you anxious.
A delayed or missed period can happen for a number of reasons, including delayed ovulation, especially after a miscarriage, but given your history of retained pregnancy tissue and the ongoing investigations, I think it's sensible that you're under the recurrent miscarriage clinic and waiting for the 3D pelvic scan.
The spotting and cramping could have several explanations, and while they don't necessarily mean something serious is wrong, I can understand why they feel worrying in the context of your history. If the bleeding becomes heavy, the pain becomes severe, or you develop a fever or feel unwell, I'd seek medical advice urgently rather than waiting.
Otherwise, I'd be inclined to keep pushing for follow-up if your period still doesn't arrive or your symptoms continue. Sometimes a gentle but persistent approach is needed, particularly when you're already under specialist care.
Hopefully someone who's experienced recurrent miscarriage, retained tissue or delayed ovulation after surgery can share their experience. Wishing you all the best, I hope you get some answers and that your scan provides some reassurance.
