Which in your opinion is the poshest name? Oscar, George, Henry, Max, or Leo?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Rubyslipperswitch · 05/07/2026 20:25

They are just normal, common names for boys. Nothing particularly 'posh' about any of them.

SweepSqueaks · 05/07/2026 20:28

How can you be so very intrigued when the names are so ordinary? I can’t see where the intrigue comes in.

None of them sound posh, they are just bog standard boy names. You could throw a stone and hit two Oscar’s, Max’s or Henry’s near me. Leo less common but not close to sounding posh

where I work there are around 150 pupils and come September we will have 4 Leos! Locally it seems to be one of the most popular boys names.

Treylime · 05/07/2026 20:50

A good example: Princess Diana wanted to call William either Oliver or Sebastian (very Sloaney names in the early 80s) but had to settle for something more appropriately aristocratic.
Diana would never have been able to use Oliver (Cromwell)

greglet · 05/07/2026 21:01

@TreylimeNo of course not, but both Oliver and Sebastian are what I’d think of as generally (but not exclusively) middle class names now; 40-odd years ago they were probably more UMC.

GotALionInMyPocket · 05/07/2026 21:07

Henry sounds poshest.

Amazonjaunt · 05/07/2026 21:19

Henry is the poshest.

Henry and George but noone names their children that anymore.

In England and Wales they definitely do! George is 6th most popular name and Henry 12th for babies born in 2024. Soooo many around.

oviraptor21 · 05/07/2026 21:36

Henry

Followed by Leo, Oscar, Max, George (last two not posh at all)

GoFigure235 · 05/07/2026 21:54

I would rank them as follows (in order of descending poshness): Henry, George, Max, Leo, Oscar. They're all perfectly nice boys names though, although the only ones we had on the list for our own DC were Max and Leo.

Happytaytos · 05/07/2026 22:03

Real posh Leo's are Leopolds.

Marmalademorning · 05/07/2026 22:13

Depends what kind of posh you’re after OP.

I live in a well to do small market town with lots of trendy rich Londoners who’ve moved here since the pandemic. We know lots of them through my daughter’s school. I’ve been surprised at the number of unusual names. Lots of which I never come across before.

If you want something traditional posh though you could go for something like Charles/ Hugo I guess? 🤷‍♀️

ErrolTheDragon · 06/07/2026 00:08

Henry or George are classless - could be posh but the first one that came to mind was George Grundy from the Archers who definitely isn’t.

Eh? There are so many Georges! There are at least 6 in my DC’s school year plus a friend has a George.

Calliopespa · 06/07/2026 10:51

SparkyBlue · 05/07/2026 16:36

I would say George and Henry are classics that have always been in fashion

Agree: Henry and George the poshest.

Oscar and Max and Leo have never really been posh. They have had a surge of popularity but are bourgeois if anything.

isaidmaybeyoure · 06/07/2026 10:52

I personally would steer clear of Oscar, George and Max because I’m a big f1 fan and I wouldn’t want to name my child after the drivers!

Yes, that would be my ranking too.

Are you specifically looking for posh op? Or do you mean traditional?

Sebastian is now MC at a push I'd say!

Oh, ffs 🤣🤣🤣

Calliopespa · 06/07/2026 10:59

I only know of posh Horatios and Peregrines Op! That's where you should head if you want conspicuously posh. Most posh family names are not conspicuously posh and are actually quite widely used, like Charles, Henry, Edward.

ginasevern · 06/07/2026 11:01

There was a time when all of them would've been considered rather posh. Sort of like Rupert, Piers or Caspar, but these days they've become fashionable and pretty bog standard. I don't think George was considered especially posh though even though it was a regal name, as there was a proliferation of working class boys called it pre-war, including my father.

maudelovesharold · 06/07/2026 11:04

If you want posh, you can’t go wrong with Balonz.

I think the upper classes and WC have always shared names like George and Albert. It's the MC who go off on tangents with Sheridan and Caspian.

allthemind · 06/07/2026 11:15

I have 4 teenage boys and they all know loads of boys called these names. Some at private schools, some at local academies and some at grammar school. Parents range from builders to lawyers. Youngest son plays Rugby and Football and each team has at least one of all of these. The Rugby team has 2 Maxs and 2 Oscars and 1 each of the other, Football team has one of each. His school year has 1 Leo, 1 Oscar, 3 or 4 Maxs and 2 Georges. I really think these are generic boy names now and pretty classless.

Names that still come across as 'posh-boy' to me are more about double barelled surnames. Poshest kids I know are also called fairly generic names like James and Henry. I know some UMC Teddys as well. I dont think I know any actual aristos so dont know what they call their boys these days, but I'd guess similat to all these.
