Is Sunday a bad girl name?

I know Sunday is an odd name and I know it’s been gaining a bit more popularity over the past year but I really like the name Sunday especially with just the meaning of like a Sunday morning kind of beauty and the nickname Sunny. I’m not too sure I’m on the fence with it due to how some people would react to naming my daughter after a day of the week?? opinions?

Fern McCann’s daughter is called Sunday, that alone would put me off.

Sonny is a boy name though.

Yes, I thought that as well - different route, but the exact same sound. Aurally, it sounds like the equivalent of calling a boy Missy!

I would always be cautious of using out-there names that are being used a bit more, but only by celebrities. Your life will be very different from theirs, and your child won't even have the nepo connections that theirs will.

Think about how it goes: 1, celeb has a baby; 2, the baby's out-there name is announced throughout the media; 3, the general public mock and laugh about it, and say how ridiculous/weird/bad it is - or some say they like it, but still make the obvious jokes and trite old comments; 4, the public get used to it and it just becomes familiar and accepted as that famous person's baby's name, with little comment.

Thus, within a few years, when the celebrity child is old enough to start making their way in the world, they go instantly to stage 4.

Your child, by contrast, as a (presumably) non-celebrity, has to go through the equivalent of stages 2, 3 and (eventually) 4, every single time they ever meet somebody new throughout their entire life.

I think it will be annoying for her. People say Sunday in many other contexts. Give it as her middle name then she can decide if she wants ro use it later.

palepeony · Yesterday 09:38

It’s a really pretty name
Go for it

You're just having a blip, don't worry we all have them. Sleep on it and try again tomorrow

What is Sunday morning beauty? I have no idea what that means. And what if she isn’t a beauty?

I know people like to do the High Court Judge test on here but I prefer to do the harangued middle aged woman test. You’re tired and busy and trying to make a Doctors appointment, how do you feel about saying “My name is Sunday Ramsbottom…
yes S U N D A Y… yes that’s right like the day of the week, I know it is unusual… “
I don’t think I would.

MrsShankly · Yesterday 11:13

I think it’s a bit cheesy because of the celeb references and so it’s been taken now, along the lines of calling your civilian kid Apple, when Gwyneth Paltrow already used it.

Why not go for the baby’s month name, because month names are at least recognised as being used for people’s names.

or maybe try to focus down on what it is exactly about beauty or Sundays that you are thinking of, and see if there’s a name that you like that’s to do with that.

if it’s that you like the sound of Sun-day then there will be near names to that.

Didimum · Yesterday 11:23

I had a fish called Sunday when I was a child …

My friend’s girlfriend is called Tuesday, and she does get quite a lot of tiresome shit for it unfortunately.

SwedishEdith · Yesterday 12:32

Just looked up Tuesday Weld and she wasn't even born with that name. So agree, any name where a celeb did it first is a bit naff.

Aren't lots of people hungover on Sunday mornings? Not sure what Sunday morning beauty is. Maybe go for Summer or Autumn because they are more established names and beautiful summer or autumn mornings make more sense.

👏 absolutely agree

Would you like to be called this name? Imagine introducing yourself to a new group with this name.

Also are you mid pregnancy? I came up with some absolute howlers at that stage.

Honestly, I’d prefer it to introducing myself with one of those generic beige names like Jack or Sophie. You might as well just have a number.

I’ve had both extremes, in that my name was so common for my generation in my home country that there were six of us in my primary school class, and there would be at least two others, or a similar name it was often confused with, in any setting, but it’s very unusual in the UK.

PancakeCloud · Yesterday 21:02

I think it’s a really cute name, Sunday nn Sunny. Sounds fresh.

This seems not even in the weirdest 30% based on my child’s nursery. Really, Sunday is fine.
