girl names that work in English and Spanish but don’t end in “a”

I have a long list of girl names that work in both English and Spanish, but almost all of them end in “a.” Like, Clara, Marina, Juliana, Luisa, etc. I’m looking for name suggestions with a different sound, such as Nieves or Marisol (although probably both of those would be hard for some English speakers). Thanks!

Exactly! Not very common in the manner of Balonz perhaps? As far as I'm aware it's not a "name" in the manner of Dolores or Carmen.

It is absolutely a name. It's just a bit old fashioned these days, like Consuelo, Purificación, Dolores, Remedios etc.

PrincessOfPreschool · 29/06/2026 13:14

It does end in 'a' but I love Miranda, sorry!

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 29/06/2026 13:14

Yes perhaps, but only at first glance. 'Zoshee' is quite easy to say.

That’s not how you pronounce it but ok….

anyway I came to recommend Citlali

Not one I have ever come across. Who'd saddle a child with that?

Calliopespa · 29/06/2026 22:26

Xochitl

How is this pronounced?

mathanxiety · 29/06/2026 23:15

It's pronounced Zo-shee.

It is how all the Zo-shees I know pronounce it. I know quite a few, both friends of mine and friends of my DDs through school, in the US.

Zo rhymes with low.
Shee is self explanatory.

It has been a name snce Catholicism has been a thing in the Spanish speaking world.

Well I have the bad news that they mispronounce it.

im Mexican and were taught Náhuatl in school…

its pronounced Zo-chee-tel. Even if you don’t pronounce the “TL” you’d still pronounce the “L”. It means flower.

Cenpasuchil is marigold (but we’d never use it as a name because of the day of the dead)
