Thoughts on Lilia or Liliana for a girl’s name

Thoughts on the girls name Lilia or Liliana (PS - i’m not bothered about the fact that Lilia was a sanitary brand product as it’s doesn’t affect my generation)

middle name will most likely be Florence or Iris but again not to worried about how it flows with middle name as people rarely hear the full name anyway

I prefer Liliana (and also like Iris and Florence), Lilia is more awkward to say I think

aliceyyyy2654 · 16/06/2026 18:48

Both very pretentious

RudePhthaloDalmadoodle · 16/06/2026 18:58

Love Liliana, but people with non-rhotic accents will pronounce it Lily-arr-ner. I'm never sure if Lilia should be pronounced as two syllables (lil-ya) or three (lil-ee-uh).

Excellentsausages · 16/06/2026 22:58

I don't think Iris works well with a middle name starting with a vowel. Iris Florence works fine.

I like Apolline as a first name- Apolline Florence?

Lilianna/Liliana is nice too, I much prefer it to Iris. I agree Lilia somehow sounds unfinished.

Marcipex · 16/06/2026 23:43

Iris Florence is gorgeous.

I like Lily much better than Lilia/na but it’s so popular. There are oceans of them. And all call each other Lil.

NamingNoNames · 17/06/2026 11:37

@Marcipex , that was the pp's question. In English, it's Lily-a. In other languages it could be LIL-ya or LEE-lee-a or Lee-LEE-a....

I'd say it as LIL-ya.

A lifetime of having to correct or spell the name out. Not kind in my view. Lily would be better.

SapphireSparkIes · 17/06/2026 11:46

I have a Lily. When pregnant with her I really considered naming her Lilia instead but I found when I said it over and over it sounded too much like Lydia which I really dislike. Lilia has more European vibes I think. Ultimately I’m pleased we went with Lily.

Love Florence.

Elliana is lovely if you want something similar to liliana.

Elliana or Elianna Florence

seasidemum83 · 20/06/2026 07:18

I like Lilia
it feels to me soft, there is a simplicity but yet unique.

This is so useful and LOVE the suggestions definitely my style

worry Iris Florence is 2 common names and want a slightly more out there fun middle name

what are your thoughts on

Iris Apolina/apoline
iris Aphia (pronounced ‘a-fee-a’)

Oh I really like Apolline - though I think it has two Ls?

I think that's a fabulous suggestion. A good strong name but still feminine and pretty. Brilliant choice.

Aphia I am not so fond of and really don't like it with a flower name as it is too close to aphid. Imagine Rose Aphia!

Yup I love Apolline Florence.

I'm sure it has double L Op: it;s from Apollo.

Drivingselfmad · 20/06/2026 09:06

Both nice names. As a teacher I see an increasing number of Lilia/Liliahs (high school). But that wouldn’t put me off choosing a name.

boomshakalakaboom1 · 20/06/2026 09:21

Liliana is a lovely name.

Roomonthe3rdfloor · 20/06/2026 09:25

Prefer Lilia to Liliana, and also like Iris.

Florence is common and personally think its such a wet pansy name.

MinnieCauldwell · 20/06/2026 09:25

Sorry but Lilia sounds like sanitary protection.

Belmondo · 20/06/2026 09:26

Liliana is lovely. I like Lilia but just prefer the longer name I think.

Apolline is pretty but I'm not a fan of Aphia. Do you like Aphra? You might also like Agatha, Linnet, Anthea and Althea. I think Iris Althea is beautiful.

LBFseBrom · 20/06/2026 09:33

Lilia sounds like a tampon and Liliana is ostentatious.

What is wrong with Lily or Lilian?

Would you be less rude if you knew these were very common names in Eastern Europe? Or are you aware of that and just think they're too foreign?
