Manon - Welsh pronunciation? Is this very marmite?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I’d never heard of it until I moved to Wales. Not my favourite name.

PrincessOfPreschool · 07/06/2026 21:20

I thought it was a French name. I pronounce it like 'non' in French without the 'n' sound at the end. Anyway, it's my best friend's name so I like it!

nocoolnamesleft · 07/06/2026 21:22

I would assume French pronunciation. What's the Welsh pronunciation?

HoldMyWine · 07/06/2026 21:22

I don’t know what the pronunciation is. Man-on? I like it

Eileen101 · 07/06/2026 21:24

One of my favourites, along with angharad.

WaitingForMojo · 07/06/2026 21:25

MAN-on in Welsh. It is a Welsh name as well as French. I don’t know many who are children, lots aged around 30-35.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 07/06/2026 21:25

Lovely name and not overused.

TinDogTavern · 07/06/2026 21:27

I love it. Live in Wales so slightly biased. Super-easy to pronounce compared to some Welsh names.

Arlanymor · 07/06/2026 21:30

MAH-non - the inference is always on the penultimate syllable in Welsh and in a short name then sometimes it is the first vowel! I don't think anyone gets too excited about it though. Gorgeous name - beautiful queen! Not surprised people are confused by the French because Welsh and French are Brythonic languages - we have the same word for bridge after all! I'm a Rhian (also a queen!)... and have to remind people that the Rhi is the stressor!

HudALledrith · 08/06/2026 10:20

It's MAN-onn. In Welsh names the stress is always on the penultimate syllable, and a vowel in an unstressed syllable does not get said as a schwa.
(Rhian is RHEE-ann not REE-un. Rhiannon is Rhee-ANN-onn.)

Manon is very popular but it's not currently popular for babies.

csg376 · 08/06/2026 19:22

Gorgeous name. I’m not Welsh but would have no trouble pronouncing it.

Clearinguptheclutter · 08/06/2026 19:27

I’m Welsh and love it.
pronounced very similar to the French way but the second n is (lightly) pronounced

NelferchyLlyn · 08/06/2026 19:30

I love it but from my username, you can see I am also Welsh. Its a name that isnt that common anymore, I have no idea why though.

If I was to have another child, I think it would be in my shortlist.

tsmainsqueeze · 08/06/2026 19:39

Lovely.

Probably because the new parents knew several of them already and because it's not the same style as the names that are currently popular.

HudALledrith · 09/06/2026 13:32

A comparison might be with Rebecca. In the late 1980s and 1990s is seemed like every baby girl was a Rebecca but it's not popular now.
