Would Maximus Decimus Meridius be too much for a baby name?

My DH is a huge Ridley Scott fan. He wants to call our son Maximus Decimus Meridius.
I’m not so sure. I’m worried he might get bullied?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Spelling’s a bugger.

Before I retired, I’d taught TJ, T.J., T-J and Teejay.

I’m betting that the kid regretted the last one: there is a maths textbook series in Scotland under the imprint of Teejay Publications.

I knew someone who named their son TJ. I presumed it was short for something when I first heard it. To be honest, still can’t really see it as a proper name.

Not uncommon or notable in Ireland. I know several PJs (Patrick/James or John I suppose?), a TJ and a DJ (Dominic John).

It did get misused.

You can just put 😂on the thread. Then we all enjoy it.

Trouble is there have been so many funny posts it would be: "quote" 🤣
... for about ten posts in a row 😂

But at least the PJ and. DJ are nicknames or abbreviations of a longer name. The TJ I know is just the two letters, so his birth certificate reads ‘ TJ Smith’ , not Thomas James Smith (random names selected).

The first time that I saw it, I thought that it was short for Thomas John, or the like. Nowadays, I'm seeing the initials or the 'Teejay' example only.

I've also seen boys who have the official forename of Junior.

Yes, that's what we're seeing in schools now. I've also come across an A.J., though I'm unclear as to whether those were inspired by Alan John [for example] or whether it's a re-spelling of Ajay.

I've had people doubting me when I've said that we almost had a La-a [Ladasha] one time: "It's an urban myth!"

I was more peeved by the fact that the parents had mistakenly used a hyphen instead of a dash.

caringcarer · 01/06/2026 17:36

Your poor baby. Just call him Max.

Sskka · 02/06/2026 08:53

‘Initials only’ seems to have been a fashion from late 1800s/early 1900s, particularly in America – Johnny Cash was born ‘J.R. Cash’ for example. Though I also had relatives who went by their initials in preference to calling them by their actual Christian names, so in practice it was probably pretty common.

I’d like to see a bit of creativity about it though, not just ‘something-J’. Less common letters. Regional variations would be good – you could have ‘Y.I.’ in the north east, or just plain ‘R.’ in the West Country. And less mellifluous combos please – ‘W.W.’ would be an excellent name for some darling poppet.

Our youngest is just Max and we call him this sometimes!

Commodus could be quite nice as a fourth name . . . .

HappiestSleeping · 02/06/2026 15:07

The trouble with naming him Biggus Dickus is that he would spend his life searching for a woman named Incontinetia Buttocks to marry.

@Notmyreality name really has to be Honeythorn Gump.

Or failing that, what about Steve?

Flannelfeet · 02/06/2026 15:10

There is a wee boy along the road with that name.

Monty36 · 02/06/2026 15:27

Yes it is too peculiar. For the average bod.
Unless you are filthy rich and then the baby, then boy, then teenager can get away being called anything off piste.

And if he can’t find her, he’d have to settle for her mate, Fannius Flappus.

I’m Brian and so’s my wife

Bit too common these days. He'll be one of three or four in his year.

Have you considered making it a bit more unique, such as Maksymus Dessimuce Mérhydious?

That’s not unique, there’s two of those in our school.
