To think these theatre prices are outrageous?

Currently looking at HAMILTON tickets, now I understand they have a ‘star’ casting in Leslie Odom Jr, original broadway cast but FIVE HUNDRED fucking pounds? For one ticket?

There are a few £250/£275 tickets left but the vast majority left are £500.

AIBU to think there should be some sort of regulatory body to prevent this kind of bullshit pricing?

£1k for a couple to have an evening at the theatre

It is all gone terrifying- any events at all are equivalent to what used to be holiday prices

It’s madness yet I guess it’s market forces as the seats are usually full whenever I’m at a production in the West End. It does annoy me though as it never used to be this expensive!

To be fair the £500 tickets include a £250 charity donation but still a ridiculous price. We have tickets for August ( seeing it again because he is in it) but only paid £75 each. There were better priced tickets available but they sold out quickly.

If you got them when they were first released they were nowhere near that price

Of course YABU. They are a private business, they charge what they want to charge and people pay what they want to pay for it.

Presumably they are priced at £500 because someone has done a price-revenue analysis and this is the price point at which they can maximise their revenue at this point in the sales cycle.

Respectfully, what did you think would happen when they cast Leslie Odom Jr.? And putting “star” in quotes is ridiculous. He’s not some random West End actor; he’s an original Broadway cast member, a Tony winner, and one of the biggest reasons people want those tickets. His Broadway return prices were even worse.

Gosh, I’m surprised to see so many people justifying this pricing because ‘business’ - I guess that’s how they get away with it though, people will pay. If they stopped paying stupid prices then businesses would stop charging stupid prices.

Supply and demand. People were willing to pay this and thus they charged it.

I put star in quotes because he is a star and there are often stars cast to drag in audiences; not because I don’t agree he is a star. I’m sorry re if that came across incorrectly but I absolutely respect him and am not in any way suggesting he is just a random.

It's not justifying the price, we are explaining why the prices are as they are. That's how free markets work - you can make a product that 10 people will pay £500 for, or 100 people will pay £50 for. When you have limited opportunities to sell (e.g. a fixed number of seats), you go for the former.

I'm not saying it's not expensive, but it's what they want to charge. They are allowed to set the prices how they want to and that's it.

Using scare quotes (what you did - essentially putting a word in quotes when it is not actually a quote) does just that tho. It suggests you are dubious about the claim. So if you said, scathingly of someone, "oh she is such an 'important' person" it suggests you don't think she is important.

I'm not a fan of scare quotes at all btw.

As for the prices, it's as others say, supply and demand. Like high prices for holidays in August or tickets for the Olumpics. People will pay if it matters enough to them.

I was merely raising a discussion about the fact that tickets are on sale for £500.

Any business can charge whatever they like for their product.

Should that product be in limited supply and there's a huge demand for it, the business will set their prices accordingly. They'd be stupid not to take advantage of the situation.

It's crazy spike pricing because it's THE Aaron Burr (Sir) for a very limited run. I would love love love love to see it with him in it (I'm Hamilton obsessed) but my finances have limits so I resigned myself very early on that it wasn't going to happen.

Always the way for these crazy in demand limited run slots and then sanity will return again.

I haven’t but I understand supply and demand. I just am opposed to £500 theatre tickets. I’m genuinely surprised that so many are quick to say it’s ok because supply and demand exists, I will never think that’s a reasonable price to go to the theatre.
