To be utterly pissed off and fed up with this weather….

I know there’s already been loads of threads about it, so apologies for being so original but OH MY GOD!

I’m not usually a particularly whiny person and I don’t ever remember being particularly troubled by hot ( or cold!) weather before but honestly, I feel like I’m going lose my mind!

Maybe it’s combined with hot flushes or something because no one else I know seems to be struggling that much.

I was fine at first; just thought it would only be a couple of days we’d have to suck it up. We
got the fans out, ate a criminal amount of ice lollies and did as little as possible. But now it feels like it’s been a couple of weeks of non stop over 28 degree heat every day where I live. It’s also unbearably humid. Trying to clean the house is grim. I feel like I’m swimming through treacle and my brain is mush. I can’t concentrate on work, I can’t sleep at night. I am constantly uncomfortable and the house has now heated up to such an extent that no room is even close to cool.

I realise this probably sounds ridiculous but I can’t really go out in this heat. I mean I can go to work (though my office has no air con and is also grim) and I can manage the school run and the supermarket etc, but I can’t go for a walk, or run about at the park with the kids. I definitely wouldn’t want go out in town or mooch about the shops, or eat out etc. I don’t want go in the garden because it’s so hot. The swimming pool is lovely but the changing rooms are beyond the pale. There’s no way I could cope with a day out at the zoo or a theme park with the kids.

I’ve never been so hot or so uncomfortable in my life! I have lots of loose, comfortable clothes, summer shoes etc but I still feel like I want to rip my skin off!

Is it just me? Weather forecast seems to be saying 10 more days of heat wave and I could cry!

Yes i wonder whether those posters would put their money where their mouths are and volunteer to be last in line if there are food shortages

They'll be at the front no doubt.

I wonder though if we're going to have hotter summers, does that mean we could start growing different types of veg? Or is that a naive notion?

Yes and no. It could work in some cases but we don't have the staff to pick and pack vegetables like you have in central and eastern Europe. So even if we could adapt more Mediterranean methods and crops, assuming our soils would allow it, it's still going to be labour intensive and very expensive to harvest. All meaning higher prices at the till.

The main problem is the cereal cropping in this country. Primarily wheat. That's what goes into our staple bread (and our pasta and beer). If this has bad years, like 2025, bread prices go up.

But it's not just that. Poor quality wheat goes for animal feed. Less of this to go around = price rises in eggs, milk, beef etc.

But it doesn't stop there. The dry, hot weather has hammered the grass crop. Hay and silage prices are extortionate at the moment. Hay has actually been difficult to get hold of in periods over the last year. Silage and hay now goes for double what it did in 2024.

Hay and silage are relied upon by farmers to feed animals in winter, but they've been having to use winter stores in summer to top up natural grazing because there isn't enough thanks to the weather. So not only are prices going up, the availability is going down. Animal feed is scarce, which leads to smaller herds, and less food.

All of this leads to less meat and dairy production, and higher prices in the supermarket.

I really don't understand how people can look at this baking weather with food literally dying in the fields and go "isn't this nice, more please". I mean where's the survival instinct? Are they so numb to reality that they think supermarkets get it all out of a factory which makes it out of thin air?

Thanks for this excellent, insightful comment.

I guess tough times are ahead, possibly already starting, if this war with Iran carries on through Autumn or spreads to the wider region, which I understands negatively affects fertiliser supply.

But as regards rising temperatures, we really do have our heads buried in the sand. I hadn't even thought about the things you mention in your comment.

I don't *know what contingencies can be made from a farming perspective. I haven't a clue.

Fertiliser is a whole other problem for sure.

Honestly I don't know what the solution is.

The other problem with crops failing which I didn't even touch upon is that it then means farmers go under financially. Which means one less food producer. Which means higher prices etc etc.

I know more than one farming family who have given up on commercial farming and now grow only what they and their family need. Excess land was sold for development.

It should be a worry to everyone when farmers have to decide to stop producing food to sell and only produce food for themselves. Most of us don't have the land to be self-sufficient!

As I said in my earlier posts, I don't even want cold rainy weather. I would just like a normal British summer for once. One without financially crippling heatwaves and dry spells.

Our land is green and pleasant precisely because we get a good amount of rain. When that stops, it's no longer so green and pleasant. I feel genuinely sad that we might not have the normal summers of the past, with a good mix of nice warm days and rainy spells in between.

I'm in Edinburgh and freezing today. Needed extra fleeces and could even put heating on!

I'm moving up to Edinburgh!

the80sweregreat · Yesterday 16:10

I am envious of those with colder weather , but honestly this heat is so draining and you can’t do much.
I did hear it’s making it’s up north , so those who want it a bit hotter may have some later on this week. I can imagine it’s difficult hearing that we are all boiling and you’re not having any sun at the moment.
Id just like some rain.

Thawtfulpanda · Yesterday 16:19

I'm worried about wild fires. We haven't had rain since a big storm in the last heat wave. We are forecast for another week at least of sun before any look of a tiny drizzle. So the grass fields near me are like a tinder box.

QuintadosMalvados · Yesterday 16:23

For the first time in a while it was so hot I actually had a completely sleepless night a few weeks ago. Zilch, nada, nothing.

There was no obvious other cause but the heat.

No 'glorious' weather is worth that. I'd rather it pissed down and was cold.

Exactly, it's absolutely wild that people aren't understanding the consequences of this but then when you've got a right wing media pushing the idea that it's all bollocks and there's a 'climate agenda' what can you do. (Know who does have an agenda? The super wealthy who want to keep on making obscene profits off of destroying our planet)

It's currently 35° in my garden, Im trying to work in a stuffy dark room that's 30° and I am so so done with it!

RudolphTheReindeer · Yesterday 16:50

I can't handle the heat at all. I've already had one nap today and I'm ready for another. I think my body just wants to shut down to handle it.

It'a hot where I am today (South Yorkshire) - 29 degrees.
The fields are parched, and if we don't get any rain soon I expect we will get another hosepipe ban. Last year the reservoirs were frighteningly low before Yorkshire Water instigated a ban.

Buy yourself a set of cooling towels off amazon. Keep them in yej fridge and pop one on your neck before a walk etc. Get out and about into some woods or somewhere with periodic shade - not a play park or a town.

I absolutely hate it!! Sweating my tits off constantly, can't sleep, thumping headaches, fans not helping. Have a half hour walk to the school and it makes me ill, every part of me dripping in sweat by the time I get home, clothes and hair wringing wet!! I'm in a foul mood constantly and it hasn't rained for 84 years!! Had enough of it, just fuck off! Anyone who likes this weather is a psychopath

Totally agree.
The headaches are annoying me. Lots of water and some paracetamol helps, but it is shit.

FFSItsTooHot · Yesterday 17:53

If I hear one more person say 'Its called summer' I swear I will lose my shit. Up until the last few years, summer in the UK has not involved weeks on end of temperatures in the high 20s or mid 30s! And before someone says '1976',that really was an unprecedented one off. I'm nearly 63 and my memories of summer were temperatures in the low 20s, occasionally rising to mid 20s, interspersed by cloudy days and rain. Very occasionally there'd be a couple of days of higher temperatures in the upper 20s,but never did I experience the sort of relentless heat that we've had over the last few years in the summer. During summers in my teens and twenties,I can actually recall days when it felt a little chilly! And before I get called a kill joy or a misery because I'm not a heat lover,I take 3 different medications that interfere with my body's ability to cool down. I only discovered this quite recently, previously I was beginning to think there was something wrong with me as I seemed to be the only person who wasn't celebrating it hitting 35 degrees!

the80sweregreat · Yesterday 17:59

The ‘it’s only summer ‘ brigade are mostly climate change deniers I’ve found.

But if you do this, absolutely never put hot water in it again! Freezing the rubber weakens it.

Have separate hot water bottles for the freezer and for hot water.
